2024 Isuzu D-MAX Tour Mate utes detailed

New special-edition D-MAX dual-cabs are ready-made tourers for grey nomads

Isuzu Ute Australia (IUA) has unveiled a pair of new special-edition Isuzu D-MAX dual-cab 4x4 utes armed with a bunch of extra gear and some sharp drive-away pricing.

The new 2024 Isuzu D-MAX LS-U Tour Mate and LS-U+ Tour Mate are priced from $69,990 drive-away and $73,990 drive-away respectively, and they come with more than $9000 worth of commonly optioned accessories to create two of the most tour-ready rigs on the market.

The special-edition makeover takes the standard LS-U and LS-U+ and adds a genuine tow bar kit, 12-pin wiring harness, electric brake controller, Clearview extendable heated and power-folding towing mirrors, a canopy with dual lift-up windows and slimline weather shields.

No changes are made to the standard LS-U and LS-U+ specification sheet beyond the new accessories, meaning both models still roll on 18-inch alloy wheels and highway terrain tyres as standard, and they ride on the standard D-MAX suspension set-up.

Standard equipment highlights between the two include dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and start, eight-speaker sound system, a 9.0-inch infotainment interface with smartphone mirroring, a 7.0-inch driver’s display, automatic LED headlights and adaptive cruise control, with the LS-U+ adding leather upholstery, power adjustable driver’s seat and heated front seats.

IUA says the accessories add 85kg to the kerb weight of both variants, which naturally reduces their respective payloads – albeit marginally – to 910kg for the LS-U Tour Mate and 905kg for the LS-U+ version.

No changes have been made to any of the familiar D-MAX mechanicals, which in this instance comprise a 140kW/450Nm 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, six-speed Aisin automatic transmission, selectable 4x4 system with low-range gearing and a rear differential lock.

Tour Mate versions of the D-MAX were last offered Down Under in 2019, based on the previous-generation model, and have now been reintroduced to make the Japanese-engineered, Thai-built ute even more appealing to caravanners and regular towers.

“The reintroduction of the D-MAX Tour Mate not only adds convenience by simplifying the accessory selection process, but it also offers customers unmatched value for money,” said IUA deputy managing director Koichiro Yoshida.

“It’s an uncompromising combination of the most sought-after accessories historically chosen by Australian buyers – a package driven by sales data that bundles together what customers want – in a compelling package that offers three times the value for the same money.”

IUA reckons the Tour Mates’ accessories and drive-away pricing represents a saving of more than $6100 in all states and territories compared to manually upspeccing an LS-U or LS-U+ crew-cab to the same level.

The local D-MAX portfolio will further expand later this year or early next with the release of the Walkinshaw-engineered ‘Blade’ tough truck, which will be aimed at the Premcar-built Nissan Navara PRO-4X Warrior and Toyota HiLux GR Sport.
