The entry price to the Isuzu MU-X will reduce next year when Isuzu Ute Australia (IUA) introduces a lower-output but more economical 1.9-litre turbo-diesel engine option for the popular family SUV.
Following the move already made in the Isuzu D-MAX ute, a company spokesperson told carsales today that “IUA plans to introduce the Isuzu 1.9-litre engine available in some current D-MAX variants to the MU-X range in 2024”.
“Exact timings and model range at this stage is not confirmed, but we will provide more information when it becomes available,” the spokesperson said.
Using the D-MAX as a guide, we expect the 1.9-litre four-cylinder diesel will make its way under the bonnet of the base MU-X LS-M model and possibly even the mid-range LS-U, serving as a more affordable proposition for those not in need of a 3500kg braked towing capacity.
Towing capacity in the ute reduces to 3000kg with the 1.9-litre engine, which produces 110kW of power, 350Nm of torque and is combined with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.
Combined-cycle fuel economy is down 1.0L/100km compared to the equivalent 3.0-litre version.
The manual gearbox is not expected to be offered in the MU-X, which is currently auto-only across the range, but we anticipate the 1.9-litre engine will be available with both a 4x2 and 4x4 driveline.
The current MU-X range relies on a 140kW/450Nm 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel that returns 8.3L/100km.
Price-wise, the smaller mill should shave about $2000 off the equivalent MU-X 3.0-litre model, suggesting a possible new entry price of $46,900 plus on-road costs.
