Australian pricing and specification details for the hotly anticipated new 2024 Kia EV9 have been released – including a starting figure above $100,000 once on-road costs are factored in.
As predicted, the three-variant 2024 Kia EV9 line-up (at least until the high-performance GT flagship arrives next year) will formally start from $97,000 plus on-road costs for the entry-level, single-motor rear-wheel drive Air version of the all-electric seven-seat SUV.
That makes the three-row EV the most expensive Kia ever to be sold in Australia, though it’s cheaper than its only direct rival, the Mercedes-Benz EQB (from $106,200 plus ORCs). The only other battery-powered seven-seat SUV available in Australia was the Tesla Model X, which was discontinued in 2020.
From there, the line-up moves to the mid-level, dual-motor all-wheel drive Kia EV9 Earth – priced from $106,500 plus ORCs – before arriving at the flagship dual-motor Kia EV9 GT-Line, which will set buyers back $121,000 plus ORCs.
Despite the three-figure price tags, the once-cheap-and-cheerful Korean auto brand is buoyant about the EV9’s popularity in Australia, where it firmly believes it will sell about 100 vehicles per month – its current factory allocation.
The Air and flagship GT-Line will be available in dealerships from this month, while the mid-range Earth – widely expected to be the top-seller – won’t come on line until early 2024 due to production delays.
Kia says a prospective customer who places an order for the EV9 today will only wait three or four months for their vehicle to arrive – depending on specification and colour.
This is despite more the 12,000 registrations of interest for the EV9 on Kia’s website.
The Kia EV9 Air anchors the line-up with a rear electric motor producing 160kW and 350Nm, claimed 0-100km/h acceleration in 8.2sec and a WLTP-verified range of 443km. It draws energy from a 76.1kWh battery.
Standard equipment includes 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, LED daytime running lights and LED tail-lights, retractable door-handles, powered tailgate, heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats and a vehicle-to-load charging function.
Infotainment comprises two 12.3-inch screens divided by a separate 5.0-inch screen for HVAC controls, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, Kia Connect smartphone connectivity, sat-nav and over-the-air updates.
The mid-level Earth moves to a dual-motor arrangement to provide 283kW and 700Nm, a 0-100km/h time of 6.0sec and a claimed range of 512km – courtesy of a larger 99.8kWh battery.
Additional equipment at this trim level (over and above the Air) comprises gloss black exterior highlights, ambient interior lighting, artificial leather seats, a 360-degree surround view monitor, blind spot view monitor in the instrument cluster and PCA reversing system.
Meanwhile, the flagship GT-Line employs the same 283kW/700Nm dual-motor drivetrain and 99.8kWh battery, offering a faster 5.3sec 0-100km/h time courtesy of software tweaks but a reduced range of 505km claimed.
The flagship adds larger 21-inch alloy wheels, superior LED headlight technology, privacy glass, digital side mirrors, dual tilt and slide sunroof, artificial suede roof lining, two-tone artificial leather seats, head-up display, 14-speaker Meridian sound system, digital rear-view mirror, heated and ventilated rear outboard seats and superior vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality.
The EV9 is backed by Kia’s seven-year/unlimited kilometre warranty in Australia, while its battery is backed by a separate seven-year/150,000km term.
The manufacturer says a five-year/75,000km service pack will set buyers back $1351 based on 12-month/15,000km intervals.
The EV9 offers a 900kg braked towing capacity for the entry Air model and a 2500kg braked towing capacity for the dual-motor Earth and GT-Line variants. All three models offer a tyre inflation kit in lieu of a spare tyre.
