The new-generation 2024 Maserati GranCabrio has made its global debut and will arrive Down Under in the final quarter of this year, just a couple of months after the closely-related new Maserati GranTurismo coupe.
Australian pricing and specifications details for both models are still being decided, but the new GranCabrio has so far only been shown in top-spec Trofeo guise thus far, and it packs fewer kiloWatts than its coupe sibling.
In this application, the twin-turbo Nettuno V6 outputs 399kW – 11kW less than in the GranTurismo Trofeo – presumably in order to give the sharper coupe more of a performance edge over the waftier soft-top.
Like the long-running models (2007-2019) they belatedly replace, the new GranCabrio looks virtually identical to the GranTurismo save for its altered rear deck and folding fabric roof, which can be stowed or raised in 14 seconds at up to 50km/h.
Maserati says its designers were careful to not impede on cabin accommodation for four adults – a major selling point of the new GranTurismo – when the two models were developed concurrently.
And of course the GranCabrio’s interior itself follows the same design philosophy as the coupe’s, with a tasteful blend of modernity and classic touches including traditional dials for the digital instrument cluster and the digital analogue clock, and a dedicated virtual HVAC control panel.
To offset the chill factor and buffeting associated with an open top, the GranCabrio will come with an integrated neck-warmer as standard and an optional wind-blocker for the rear seats when they’re not in use (with the roof down).
Five colours will be offered for the roof itself, plus a number of other personalisation touches for the exterior and cabin.
“The Trident’s new convertible is 100 per cent made in Italy and follows in the footsteps of the GranTurismo, offering a new and captivating version of the grand tourer par excellence, without sacrificing luxury, performance, driving comfort, and sportiness,” said Maserati.
Key performance metrics and other details are all still yet to be confirmed, but odds are the new Maserati GranCabrio will come close to matching the equivalent GranTurismo Trofeo for outright acceleration and top speed – think somewhere around the 3.7sec mark for 0-100km/h acceleration and about 310km/h at the top end.
