2024 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4MATIC+ Coupe: Australian pricing and specs

New-generation flagship coupe arrives later this month with explosive performance, all-wheel drive and mighty twin-turbo V8 intact

The all-new 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4MATIC+ Coupe will be priced from $366,500 plus on-road costs when the Australian order book opens on August 14 at Mercedes-AMG dealers ahead of deliveries later this year.

Initially, just Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4MATIC+ Coupe will be offered Down Under but a less powerful AMG GT 43 Coupe, with 310kW and 500Nm of torque, could join the line-up later as well as a hypercar-quick AMG GT 63 S E Performance that produces an astonishing 600kW and 1420Nm of torque.

Until then, buyers will have the simple choice of the AMG GT 63 that delivers a thumping 430kW and 800Nm of torque that provides for a supercar-like 0-100km/h sprint of just 3.2 seconds and a 315km/h top speed.

Unlike the last car, ensuring not a single kilowatt is wasted, AMG's flagship coupe gets a fast-shifting nine-speed automatic that employs a wet clutch instead of a torque converter for snappier changes, plus AMG's latest 4MATIC+ variable all-wheel drive system that tames some of the wayward nature of the previous car, although it can still be locked in rear-wheel drive for drifting.

When it comes to competitors, the AMG GT 63 closest rival remains the Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS that has recently been facelifted with its advanced T-Hybrid powertrains and is expected to remain priced at around $370,000.

Other alternatives include the BMW M8 Competition, at $380,000 plus ORCs and more exotic rivals like the Ferrari Roma (from $410K) or the Aston Martin DB12 ($455K), among others.

Broadening its appeal for the second-generation, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 gets more cabin space and even 2+2 seating for the first time.

Dwarfing the old car it replaces, the new AMG GT is 177mm longer, 44mm wider and 66mm taller, while to accommodate that second row, the wheelbase has also been stretched by 70mm.

Sadly, the result of its bigger dimensions, extra tech and new chassis hardware means that the AMG GT?tips the scales (with a 75kg driver onboard) at an almighty 1970kg. That figure is around?320kg heavier than the previous GT R.

Luckily, to offset that extra baggage there's standard rear-wheel steer and AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension that uses interconnected dampers. The system is said to enhance ride comfort and reduce roll through bends without the need for heavy active anti-roll bars.

Using a hydraulic pump, two-way valves on each damper apply pressure to reduce roll and provide high levels of camber rigidity.

Throw in a new locking rear differential and the second-gen GT should easily be the best-driving AMG GT yet when it comes to the way it rides, corners and steers.

Australian cars will also come equipped with AMG Track Pack within its latest MBUX infotainment system that provides on-board telemetry when out on your favourite circuit that can display lap and sector times on the centre display, head-up display or instrument cluster.

Using navigation data, the new tech can also show cornering angles and braking points, to help coach the driver to find the best line. A saved recording can be shown on the MBUX multimedia display to help you improve further.

Speaking of the MBUX, the AMG GT gets Benz's latest 11.9-inch portrait mounted touchscreen.

All the cars we get also receive AMG Sport Seats with integrated headrests as standard, plus a standard Energizing Package Plus that adds inflatable side bolsters for maximum lateral support in Sport, Sport+ and RACE driving modes. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both incorporated within the system.

Ahead of the driver is an AMG Performance double-spoke steering wheel that is finished in Nappa leather and is heated.

Large aluminium shift paddles are standard.

Other highlights of the car include a powerful 600-watt 11-speaker Bermester surround sound system, wireless phone charging, augmented reality sat-nav, 64-colour ambient lighting, AMG aluminium interior trim, a black roof lining finished in faux suede and a large fixed panoramic sunroof with a mechanical blind.

Externally, all AMG GTs sport large 21-inch 10-spoke forged alloy wheels that are combined with black painted calipers.

Driver assist aids include, lane-keep assist, traffic sign assist, a 360-degree camera, active parking assist, among others.

Options for the AMG GT 63 include an AMG Night Package ($9,900) that adds a gloss finish to the mirror caps, front grille, front splitter and rear tail pipes.

Tick the box for the Night pack and you also get the AMG Aerodynamics pack thrown in that adds 21-inch aerodynamically-optimised 21-inch cross-spoke wheels and a fixed rear wing.

Many will also be tempted by the AMG Carbon Fibre Pack ($12,900) that swaps out many of the air bending aids for items made of the ultra-lightweight composite. Inside, the same material is used on the centre console and doors, as well as the steering wheel that also gets a grippier microfibre-wrapped rim.

One final option for those who track often are the even more supportive AMG Performance Seats ($2490) that offers extra lateral support involved with hard cornering on track.
