2024 Peugeot E-208 electric hatch confirmed for Australia

The 2024 Peugeot E-208 has been confirmed for the Australian market just hours after the French car-maker unveiled its updated battery-electric light hatchback in Europe.

Expressions of interest are now being taken by Peugeot Australia on its website ahead of the 2024 local debut of the new Peugeot E-208, although exact launch timing, pricing and other details are yet to be confirmed.

The Peugeot 208 has not been available in Australia since the new generation was launched overseas in 2019, with the local importer waiting until this mid-life update.

The city car is available with a range of powertrains in Europe, including petrol, diesel and electric, but for Australia the EV version is the only one heading here for now.

It will join the Peugeot E-2008 small SUV that’s due to enter Aussie showrooms during the next three months, priced high at $59,990 plus on-road costs.

The Peugeot E-308 small car is also expected to be offered in Australia when it becomes available for our market.

Using the E-2008 and other electrified Peugeot models as a guide (including the $64,990 Peugeot 308 PHEV), count on the E-208 to be loaded to the roof lining with standard equipment, carrying a premium price to match.

It will line up against the new Fiat 500e (from $52,500 plus ORCS) and soon-to-be-updated MINI Cooper SE Electric (from $64,975), while other European EV hatchbacks in the ballpark include the bigger Cupra Born (from $59,990) and forthcoming Volkswagen ID.3 that’s also coming next year (pricing TBD).

The E-208 is powered by a 115kW single electric motor that drives the front wheels. It draws energy from a 51kWh lithium-ion battery that enables a driving range of up to 400km (WLTP).

Peugeot says the EV is capable of being charged from 20-80 per cent in about 25 minutes when hooked up to a 100kW DC fast-charger. This extends to 4h40min when using the car’s onboard 7.4kW AC charger, although a more powerful 11kW unit will be optional.

Standard equipment highlights on overseas models include exclusive 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, full LED exterior lighting, 10-inch infotainment screen, digital instrument cluster, TomTom connected navigation, over-the-air (OTA) updates, adaptive cruise control, connected services and a toggle gear selector.

Peugeot Australia managing director Kate Gillis said she was confident the E-208 would attract plenty of buyers Down Under thanks to its “electric performance and eye-catching design”.

“The new E-208 is a dynamic, modern and highly alluring city car that we believe … will strengthen our range as we re-enter the small hatch market in Australia,” she said.

The Peugeot E-Partner van is also launching soon, priced at $59,990 plus on-road costs.
