RAM has thrown the gauntlet down to Ford and other brands electrifying their full-size pick-ups.
Officially unveiled at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) overnight, the new battery-electric 2024 RAM 1500 REV pick-up promises an impressive blend of performance range, tech and amenity.
And the best news is the electric ute is coming Down Under.
The US truck icon claims the RAM 1500 REV will “provide customers the industry’s best combination of range, towing, payload and charge time”.
The headline numbers are a dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain producing up to 488kW of power and 840Nm of torque, 0-60mph (0-97km/h) acceleration in as little as 4.4 seconds and a range of over 800km with a battery pack as big as 229kWh.
Two versions will be offered. Even the standard 168kWh battery pack has a claimed targeted range of around 563km, while the whopping 229kWh model should offer about 805km.
And RAM is also teasing a 1500 REV XR extended-range variant that goes even further. It will deliver “class-shattering range”, says the truck-maker.
Thanks to 800-volt infrastructure, the 1500 REV can take advantage of 350kW charging. The Stellantis brand is claiming drivers can add 100 miles (162km) of range in 10 minutes.
Enhancing the range, a full-length bellypan as well as other aero aids reduce the drag co-efficient to a commendable 0.34Cd.
Meantime, towing capacity of the RAM 1500 REV is about 6350kg (14,000 pounds) and its payload is around 2700kg.
The new RAM REV is built on the brand’s new STLA Frame body-on-frame architecture, which is designed specifically for full-size electric vehicles. A Promaster full-size van is tipped to follow the REV pick-up soon.
Vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-grid bi-directional charging is a feature of the EV infrastructure employed in the new 1500 REV, with up to 7.2kW able to be delivered to charging ports onboard the ute.
Access to the class-leading (in terms of its 424-litre capacity) frunk (front trunk) is via a powered (up and down) bonnet. The tailgate is also powered.
“The all-electric RAM 1500 REV is a monumental milestone on our continued journey to offer the industry’s best electrified solutions and further fortifies our award-winning line-up,” said global Ram boss Mike Koval at the vehicle’s NY show debut.
“We believe in bringing the right range of powertrain solutions to our customers and will continue to redefine the pick-up truck segment. Our all-new RAM 1500 REV pushes past the competition in areas customers care about most, including range, towing, payload and charge time,” the RAM boss claimed.
The RAM 1500 REV features twin 250kW electric drive units for all-wheel drive flexibility. The front axle has an automatic disconnection system to allow the front wheels to free-wheel as required while the rear offers an optional locking differential.
Standard four-corner air suspension with adaptive damping is unique to the truck segment, says RAM. Andespite being built to work for a living, there's a sophisticated multi-link rear suspension.
Huge 22-inch wheel are standard, wrapped by 275/50-section Pirelli Scorpion all-season tyres that are said to feature reduced wear and lower road noise.
Safety systems are also at least class-leading and include semi-autonomous Hands-free Active Driving Assist and ParkSense Automated Parking System.
Maximum fording depth is around 610mm (24 inches). No off-road departure, arrival or breakover data was supplied. On-road performance is anything but lacking, however. RAM is targeting a 0-60mph (97km/h) acceleration time of 4.4sec.
In the USA, the 2025 model year Ram 1500 REV will be offered in five trim levels: Tradesman, Big Horn/Lone Star, Laramie, Limited and, introducing an all-new trim, Tungsten.
The RAM REV effectively sold out when announced earlier in 2023.
At the NYIAS, however, the company confirmed as-yet-undisclosed production levels were being increased and that additional orders could be placed. Even so, it’s believed perhaps up to the first two years of US allocation is already largely spoken for.
RAM boss, Koval, said allocation for markets like Australia would be guaranteed.
Helping it stand out from the combustion-powered RAM 1500 range, the 1500 REV gets RAM’s LED tuning fork lighting signature and an illuminated RAM badge.
Inside, RAM claims the REV is “the most technologically advanced Ram 1500 ever”, offering “a host of leading-edge features incorporated into the segment’s leading interior.
These include the advanced Uconnect 5 multimedia system with a new 14.5-inch touch-screen, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a segment-first 10.25-inch passenger screen, digital rear-view mirror, head-up display (HUD) and a Klipsch Reference Premiere audio system.
Usually seen in European sports cars and supercars, the RAM REV’s customisable 10.25-inch passenger screen offers a range of info and entertainment functions.
“Only visible to the front passenger and with dynamic touchscreen control, it offers three major functions: co-pilot (navigation, device management), entertainment (via HDMI) and the ability to view the exterior vehicle cameras,” it said.
It also has HDMI connections, which “lets occupants connect their phone or tablet, turning the touchscreen into a mirrored extension of their device, allowing internet searches, music and app use to project through the Uconnect 5 system,” said RAM.
Furthering the smartphone integration, the RAM REV offers ‘Smartphone as a Key’. This allows drivers to use their smartphone as a key to access and start the vehicle without their phone leaving their pocket. Owners can also “create digital keys that can be shared with other smartphones, with full control over the access”.
A traditional key fob is standard.
The cabin also brings a level of luxury and tech to match a premium sedan, with metallic finishes, leather and even carbon-fibre employed,, depending on trim.
RAM boss Koval has confirmed the RAM 1500 REV will come Down Under. At the time of writing, however, timing of that arrival is still to be confirmed.
