2024 RAM EV gets its name and opens for reservations

First electric pick-up from Stellantis’ truck brand to be known as RAM 1500 REV and is now open for US reservations

RAM’s first electric pick-up will be known as the RAM 1500 REV when it is released in 2024, and it’s now open for reservations at RamREV.com.

Revealed in ‘Revolution’ concept form at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas last month, the RAM 1500 REV appeared in a 60-second Big Game commercial yesterday and is almost certain to become available in Australia following its US release early next year.

“The RAM brand has redefined the pick-up truck segment before and will once again with the all-new RAM 1500 REV,” said RAM’s global CEO, Mike Koval yesterday.

The all-new RAM 1500 REV will be the biggest step so far in the electrification of the iconic RAM brand, which will see it deliver at least two full EVs and a number of hybrids.

“We believe in bringing the right range of powertrain solutions to our customers, and the RAM 1500 REV will be the first in a line-up of electrified solutions that will add to our current award-winning truck line-up,” said Koval.

“We are on an exciting electrification journey that will see RAM push past the competition in areas customers care about the most: range, payload, towing and charge time.”

But while the Tesla Cybertruck will also be fashionably late to the full-size electric pick-up party started by Rivian in 2021, the RAM 1500 REV will also lag behind the Ford F150 Lighting in North America’s domestic EV truck market.

The F-150 Lightning EV has already made a huge impact on Ford’s EV sales. In August last year, it boosted Ford’s year-on-year EV sales by 300 per cent and became North America’s best-selling electric truck.

RAM hasn’t announced pricing for the RAM 1500 REV yet, but it is expected to go close to matching the Ford F150 Lighting’s $US55,974 ($A80,875) entry price.

“At RAM, we started a revolution last year as we invited consumers along on the beginning of our electrification journey, gathering their feedback on exactly what they are looking for in an electric pick-up truck,” said Koval last week.

“We look forward to delivering our first EV pick-up – the all-new RAM 1500 REV – to those consumers next year.”

RAM has yet to announce performance or range figures for the 1500 REV, but Ford has already set the benchmark with 385 miles of range, 345kW of power and 1050Nm of torque from its entry-level F-150 Lightning Pro and its 98kWh lithium-ion battery.

Ford has an ace up its sleeve too, with the higher-performing version of the F-150 slamming down 433kW and using a 131kWh battery to deliver 515km of range, though it lifts the weight of the truck from 2738kg to 3126kg.

General Motors is also starting behind Ford’s trucks, with both the GMC Denali and Chevrolet Silverado EVs set join the GMC Hummer EV on sale in the US later this year, .

“We are confident the RAM 1500 REV will push past the competition, offering what will be the leading combination of attributes customers care about the most:  range, payload, towing and charge time,” Koval insisted.

Spun-off as a stand-alone brand in 2009, RAM is part of the Stellantis conglomerate that includes US brands Chrysler, Dodge and Mopar, along with European staples like Peugeot, Citroen, Fiat and Lancia, and performance and premium brands like Maserati, Alfa Romeo and DS.
