The long-awaited fourth-generation Suzuki Swift has finally been previewed by a concept version of the all-new light hatchback, a single image of which was released today ahead of its reveal at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show later this month.
The solitary image features as part of an exhibit preview ahead of the Japanese small-car brand’s home motor show and was accompanied by a couple of informative tidbits regarding the new Swift’s composition and intent.
Starting with the design, the 2023 Suzuki Swift Concept bears an uncanny resemblance to the camouflaged prototypes spotted testing in Spain last year, meaning we can safely assume this is what the new model will look like.
Undeniably a case of evolution rather than revolution, the new Swift could easily pass as a second facelift for the current generation released in 2017, although its front fascia, bonnet, rear haunches and glasshouse are all clearly new.
The biggest or at least the most noticeable change is the clamshell bonnet, which now proudly sits above the sharpened headlight clusters and more pursed radiator grille.
Suzuki says the Swift Concept has been designed around the idea of customers having fun with their vehicles on a day-to-day basis, building on the current model’s fun-to-drive ethos.
The new model should also be safer and more efficient than its predecessor thanks to the inclusion of a new-generation autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system, driver monitoring system, adaptive high-beam and new ‘high-efficiency engine’.
We don’t have any concrete details of this new powertrain yet, but previous intel and rumours have nominated small-capacity three- and four-cylinder petrol-electric hybrid systems as the most likely eventuality, thereby providing the pint-size runabout with a healthy helping of low-end torque – perfect for around town.
The Swift Concept will be joined at the Japan Mobility Show by a refined version of the Suzuki eVX concept, the car-maker's first "global strategic EV", which is thought to preview an electric Vitara and has been updated since it debuted at India's Auto Expo in January.
It has a range of 500km and measures 4300mm long, 1800mm wide and 1600mm high.
Also on display will be the eWX electric mini-wagon, which has a range of 230km and measures just 3395mm long and 1475mm wide but 1620mm high, the EVERY Concept delivery van and Spacia Concept minivan.
“The theme for the Suzuki booth is ‘Answers for Excitement throughout the World’,” Suzuki said.
“At the booth, we will make proposals for various mobility that stays close to people’s daily lives by bringing together technologies as a general mobility maker, starting with concept models of automobiles and motorcycles, as well as next-generation mobility and outboard motors.”
Formerly known as the Tokyo motor show, the 2023 Japan Mobility Show will open on October 26 at the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition centre.
