2024 Toyota Crown Signia steps into the limelight

No 2.4-litre turbo-hybrid for new Crown SUV, but it does get AWD as standard

Hot on the heels of the new-generation Toyota Camry reveal, Toyota USA has revealed a wagon version of its high-riding Crown sedan dubbed the Crown Signia.

Pitched as more of an SUV offering than its four-door sibling, the 2024 Toyota Crown Signia misses out on the latter’s punchy 260kW 2.4-litre turbo-petrol hybrid system and will instead come exclusively with the entry-level 2.5-litre hybrid powertrain.

The net output is still a respectable 181kW and the package still rides on Toyota’s TNGA-K platform and employs a motor-based all-wheel drive system, however, no claims have been made regarding off-road performance.

Fuel consumption is rated at 6.5L/100km on the combined cycle and a paltry 2700lb (1225kg) maximum braked towing capacity is quoted – well below the usual car-based medium and large SUV benchmarks.

Like the sedan, the Crown Signia SUV isn’t expected to be released Down Under any time soon, but the US market will score two trim levels – XLE and Limited – both of which will be loaded with luxurious appointments, albeit to different extents.

The XLE for instance comes with 19-inch alloys, fabric and SofTex seat trim, eight-way power-adjustable seats, a 12.3-inch infotainment interface, six-speaker sound system, digital instrument cluster, keyless entry and start, wireless phone charging and smartphone mirroring.

The Limited ups the ante with 21-inch alloys, quilted leather upholstery, comfort access, a memory driver’s seat, 11-speaker JBL sound system, digital rear-view mirror and smart key functionality, among other things.

Four versions of the Crown were shown at the model’s global debut earlier this year, including the aforementioned raised sedan, the dedicated SUV (Signia), a sporty crossover and a traditional sedan, but none of them are expected to make it to Australia.

Produced in Japan and exported to 40 other markets, the born-again Toyota Crown family is now pretty much as diverse as one could reasonably expect without covering the coupe, convertible or ute segments.

The low-riding sedan is about to launch in Japan and a couple of raised versions have even been spotted in Australian showrooms, courtesy of third-party importers.
