Following in the wheel tracks of its Subaru BRZ twin, manual versions of the 2024 Toyota GR 86 will receive a heap of new active safety features plus a new optional performance pack.
While automatic versions of the MY24 compact rear-wheel drive coupe will gain only a leading vehicle notice function, manual versions will soon come with autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane departure warning and automatic high-beam as standard, as per the equivalent Subaru BRZs.
That will make them eligible for a five-star ANCAP safety rating and future-proof the Toyota GR 86 against tightening Australian Design Rule requirements, but the exact local release timing of MY24 vehicles remains unclear.
Not wanting to let Subaru get a leg up in the performance stakes with its tweaked BRZ tS, Toyota Australia will offer an optional Dynamic Performance Pack exclusively for the top-spec GR 86 GTS, adding stiffer ZF Sachs sports dampers and a Brembo braking package to deliver sharper handling and enhanced stopping power.
The upgraded brakes will be easy to spot due to their bright red colour – versus the gold units on the equivalent BRZ.
Toyota Australia sales, marketing and franchise operations vice-president Sean Hanley said the GR 86’s upgrades improve the car in two vital areas – safety and performance.
“Technologies such as autonomous emergency braking aim to provide buyers with increased peace of mind, while the addition of the new Performance Pack enhances the already dynamic abilities of the GR86 even further,” he said.
Elsewhere in Toyota’s high-performance GR model range, new paint colours will be available for the GR Supra coupe and GR Corolla hot hatch, specifically Plasma Orange (replacing Silverstone Yellow) for the former and Electric Blue for the latter.
Toyota Australia is yet to confirm exactly when the updated GR 86 line-up will arrive Down Under – or how much it will cost – but we’ve contacted the company for clarification.
