2024 Zeekr X and 009 move closer to Australian launch
Right-hand drive production underway for another Geely-owned brand as Zeekr launches in ThailandChinese EV brand Zeekr is a step closer to Australia now that right-hand drive production is underway and its export program has expanded to Thailand.
A member of the Geely stable that includes Volvo, Polestar, Lotus and Lynk & Co (the latter also heading Down Under), Zeekr announced its latest plans this week at the Bangkok motor show, where the 2024 Zeekr X compact SUV and Zeekr 009 people-mover made their debut.
Pre-orders are now being taken for both models ahead of first deliveries in Thailand during the third quarter.
In Bangkok, Geely said it was now producing right-hand drive models for the south-east Asian market “in response to growing customer demands for premium smart electric vehicles”.
This now paves the way for an Australian launch, particularly for the sleek Zeekr X that carsales drove in China last year – and we came away impressed by its quirky design, performance and general road manners.
The X is based on the same platform as the new Volvo EX30.
The Zeekr 009 MPV could also be a unique offering in Australia, promising a long range and high levels of practicality.
The Geely Group has been busy preparing for Zeekr’s local introduction, lodging a variety of trademark and patent applications.
Separating Zeekr from the likes of Volvo, Polestar and Lynk & Co will be unique styling, brand marketing and pricing, with commonalities set to include platforms and powertrains.
That could suggest a degree of in-fighting is possible once all four brands (and possibly more) are operating in Australia, although local Polestar boss Samantha Johnson said recently there were no concerns on that front.
“They will all stand for different things. They will all have a different design ethos, different customer base,” Johnson told carsales.
“We welcome competition. We are on a path and we know who we are. If these other Geely brands come in I think that’s great to have more electric vehicles in Australia. It’s more choice for consumers.”
