BMW Australia has added a third variant to its incoming 2025 BMW X3 range, which has already been detailed and priced for Australia, where the larger, better-equipped new-gen mid-size SUV is due on sale by March 2025.
The freshly announced plug-in hybrid X3 30e xDrive starts from $102,500 before on-road costs, which sees it slot between the range-opening X3 20 xDrive (from $84,500 plus ORCs) and the flagship M50 xDrive ($126,900 plus ORCs).
Powering the new X3 30e xDrive is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, electric motor, and 19.7kWh battery pack, the combination of which is said to provide 91km of pure-EV driving (140km/h max) and sip just 1.6L per 100km on a combined cycle.
Producing healthy combined outputs of 220kW/450Nm, BMW claims a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6.2 seconds, which is 0.1 seconds slower compared to the previous X3 xDrive30e, despite the fact it's up on power (+5kW) and torque (+20Nm).
Meanwhile, power is sent to all four wheels via BMW’s xDrive system and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
BMW says the battery charges at 11kW as standard and can support both single-phase and three-phase AC charging.
It’s also much quicker to charge compared to its predecessor, with Bimmer quoting a 2hr 15 min charge time from zero to 100 per cent, marking a 90-minute improvement over the previous-gen plug-in hybrid X3.
Elsewhere, the Bavarian car-maker says a range of enhancements have been made to the driving experience, the way it deploys power, and consumes energy.
In ‘Electric’ mode, the engine is completely disconnected from the drivetrain, while in ‘Hybrid’ mode, the combustion engine is started prior to joining a freeway to allow the driver to accelerate at full power, whilst optimising battery charge.
Standard equipment for the mid-spec X3 30e xDrive includes 20-inch M alloy wheels, m Sport brake package with blue brake calipers), illuminated BMW kidney grille, adaptive LED headlights, electric tailgate, adaptive suspension, panoramic glass roof, and tri-zone climate control.
BMW Live Cockpit Professional (14.9-inch infotainment,12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Operating System 9) also comes equipped, as does Comfort Access, Driving Assistant Professional, digital radio, head-up display, heated front (and rear outboard) seats, wireless smartphone mirroring, wireless phone charging, M Sport leather steering wheel, and leather upholstery.
A $4000 Enhancement pack brings metallic paint, alarm system, and a Harman Kardon surround sound system, while a $2200 tow kit or M Sport Pro package ($2000) is also available, the latter adding M seat belts, red brake calipers, and darkened exterior trim.
