The covers have come off the all-new Chery Omoda 7 mid-size SUV in China, where more information has been announced for the upcoming Haval H6 GT competitor, including a plug-in hybrid powertrain claimed to be good for up to 1200km of range.
Shown at the Beijing auto show, the Chery Omoda 7 adopts the smaller Omoda 5 compact SUV’s rakish design, but adds its own unique (electrified) spin on things.
Whereas the Omoda 5 is petrol-only – at least until the all-electric Omoda E5 arrives as Chery Australia’s first EV mid-year – the Omoda 7 will be offered exclusively as a plug-in hybrid from launch.
It combines a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with an undetailed electric motor and battery pack to offer a claimed 95km of electric cruising.
Odds are that number is derived from the more generous Chinese efficiency test cycle, as opposed to WLTP or ADR, but the Omoda 7’s EV-only range should be competitive with the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which is claimed to offer up to 84km of electric cruising range.
Overseas reports state combined fuel consumption of 4.9L/100km and claim there’ll also be an internal combustion version of the Omoda 7 in the near future, almost certainly featuring Chery’s widely-employed 1.6-litre turbo-petrol powertrain.
For now though, the PHEV-only Omoda 7 has emerged with a Lexus-style borderless grille, smooth flanks and a tapered nose, and its cabin mis dominated by a 15.6-inch sliding centre screen.
The tech assault continues with a 14-speaker surround sound system, four-zone voice interaction and active noise cancelling.
Chery Australia confirmed the Omoda 7 for our market last month in the lead-up to its big reveal and said the new mid-size SUV would be here in the second half of 2024.
However, Chery HQ has since confirmed the model won’t be launched globally until 2025.
The local arm of the Chinese car-maker is on a product onslaught as it looks to challenge the established players in the mainstream SUV segments with two brands at its disposal: Chery and its Jaecoo premium marque, which will aim more at Volkswagen and Skoda than Asian brands.
With the Omoda 5 now joined by the larger Tiggo 7 Pro and seven-seat Tiggo 8 Pro Max, other models confirmed or under study for Australia include the Chery Omoda E5, Omoda 9, Tiggo 9 and the Jaecoo J6, J7 and J8 – each with various powertrain options.
