The 2025 Cupra Terramar range will be bolstered by the introduction of an advanced new plug-in hybrid set to blend 200kW of power with an all-electric range of around 110km. Landing in dealers in late 2025, the new Cupra Terramar VZe will be priced from $79,990 plus on-roads. The new PHEV will square up to the inbound plug-in Toyota RAV4 due to arrive next year.
Full pricing and specification for the 2025 Cupra Terramar VZe has been released and it reveals the Volkswagen Group's first plug-in hybrid mid-size SUV, which will command a $6500 premium over the 195kW 2.0-litre turbo-powered VZ it’s based on, but makes up the difference with lower running costs.
When it lands Down Under in November, the Cupra Terramar VZe will use the Volkswagen Group’s second-gen PHEV powertrain that combines a 150kW 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol, six-speed dual-clutch transmission, an 80kW electric motor and a 20kWh battery pack.
Combined, the new PHEV musters a punchy 200kW and 400Nm, which is enough for a 0-100km/h dash of 7.3 seconds.
Most will be attracted to promise of remarkable efficiency, with Cupra claiming an electric-only driving range of up to 110km (WLTP), along with a combined average fuel consumption of just 0.5L/100km.
Plug it in and as well as being capable of an 11kW AC charge, the new battery will accept a 50kW top-up, with a 10 to 80 per cent recharge said to take 26 minutes.
Available in VZ guise only, the plug-in Terramar VZe rides on 20-inch Hadron black and copper wheels and comes with Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) Pro that works with the Comfort, Performance and Cupra driving modes.
Matrix Ultra headlights also feature, along with a 360-degree camera, electric tailgate with gesture control, a head-up display, wireless phone charging, leather upholstery, heated steering wheel and seats, three-zone climate control and a 12-speaker premium sound system.
A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster comes standard, along with a 12.9-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Safety tech includes front and rear parking sensors, AEB with pedestrians and cyclist detection, side assist and exit assist. There's also driver fatigue detection, speed limit recognition, adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist.
Options for the Cupra Terramar VZe include a pricy $2900 for Century Bronze matte paint, $620 for Dark Void paint and a panoramic roof ($2000).
Standard colours include Glacial White, Midnight Black, Cosmos Blue, Fiord Blue and Timanfaya Grey.
The Cupra Terramar VZe spearheads the VW Group's plug-in hybrid offensive Down Under and is closely matched to its most important rival, the plug-in version of the Toyota RAV4 that will also have around 200kW and an EV range in around 100km.
What we don't know yet is how high the Japanese car-maker will price the RAV4 PHEV and whether or not buyers will judge the Terramar VZe as decent value beside the default Toyota.
