More details of the 2025 GWM Cannon have come to light following the updated version’s local ADR certification, including the presence of a nine-speed automatic transmission and a mild facelift.
Due in Aussie showrooms early next year, the updated and rebranded Cannon – formerly known as the Ute – will arrive packing the same 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine (135kW/480Nm) as its bigger Cannon Alpha sibling as well as the same in-house developed nine-speed transmission, replacing the current model’s ZF eight-speed.
It’s unclear at this stage if the familiar 2.0-litre/eight-speed combination will be retained as a cut-price alternative to the gutsier 2.4, but we do know the latter will be able to tow 3500kg (braked) and lug more than 1000kg in its tub – up to 1052kg to be exact.
Ground clearance for the dual-cab pick-ups varies between 207mm and 213mm depending on the variant while 18-inch wheels look set to feature across the range.
The documentation also reveals the 2.4-litre Cannon will introduce a new grille, reworked bumpers and a sleek new tailgate with ‘GWM’ lettering emblazoned almost all the way across, similar to the BYD Shark 6, Ford Ranger and Nissan Navara.
Our sources, meantime, tell us the cabin will be overhauled as well, and that the new aesthetic will apply to all variants, including the double-locked XSR off-road hero – albeit with its own tough spin on things.
GWM Australia is yet to detail any of these updates beyond the new engine and braked towing capacity officially, but an announcement on the new model will be made shortly seeing as the local launch is set for the first quarter of 2025.
The updated Cannon will arrive hand-in-hand with the long-awaited Tank 300 diesel which is also primed to inherit an increased towing capacity as well as an improved payload and the nine-speed transmission.
