The 2025 GWM Haval H7 – aka the Big Dog – will arrive Down Under next month priced from $46,990 drive-away.
Just one variant, the Vanta, will be offered from launch, powered by GWM’s grunty 179kW/530Nm, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol-electric hybrid system and loaded with equipment – a lesser 2.0-litre turbo-petrol is expected to be introduced later.
Something of an oddity however is the fact the H7 is only coming here as a front-drive proposition despite being pitched a more rugged and adventurous alternative to the RAV4-fighting H6.
Whatever the reasoning, GWM Australia says it will consume 5.7 litres of fuel per 100km on the combined cycle, tow up to 1500kg (braked) and swallow up to 1362 litres of cargo with the second row stowed (483L with it in place).
Looking more like a watered-down Tank than a Haval, the H7 Vanta rides on 19-inch wheels as standard and marks its location on the road with a full suite of LED exterior lighting.
Inside the cabin you’ll find leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats with a three-position memory function for the driver, dual-zone climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
The technology charge meantime is led by a 14.6-inch infotainment system harbouring wireless smartphone projection and playing through an eight-speaker sound system, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, head-up display and voice command.
Headline safety gear meantime extends to seven airbags, a 360-degree camera with a 180-degree transparent chassis view, trailer sway mitigation, adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation, roll movement intervention, front collision warning, traffic jam assist, intelligent turning, smart dodge and a driver fatigue monitoring system.
Side note, there’s no spare wheel – just a tyre repair kit.
The H7’s local introduction will expand GWM’s medium SUV portfolio from two models to three, joining the established H6 GT PHEV and just-updated H6.
“We’ve got a very, very strong SUV portfolio, which can essentially fill many, many customer’s needs differently depending on what they’re looking for in terms of size, price, and powertrain.” GWM Australia marketing and communications boss Steve Maciver said.
“[H7’s] design is quite different to H6, and that’s the reason we’ve decided to say ‘let’s go’, let’s see how it goes.
“Design is always subjective, but by giving ourselves a couple of different design options in that really high-volume mid-size SUV segment, we’re giving choice.”
The H7 is covered by GWM’s familiar seven-year/unlimited-kilometre factory warranty with eight years coverage for the battery and associated components.
