2025 GWM Tank 300 diesel arrives

GWM Australia has finally detailed its diesel-powered Tank 300 off-roader as the first examples start trickling into local showrooms priced from $47,990 drive-away.

As with the petrol and hybrid versions, the diesel 2025 GWM Tank 300 will be offered in two guises: Lux and Ultra, the latter starting from $51,990 driveaway.

Both those figures are identical to the corresponding petrols despite the diesel offering significantly more capability and equipment.

Featuring the same force-fed 2.4-litre engine as found in the facelifted GWM Cannon ute, the Tank 300 diesel is good for a respectable if unremarkable 135kW/480Nm and drives all four wheels via a part-time 4x4 system.

Its key point of difference to the petrols and hybrids however is its transmission: a nine-speed automatic developed entirely in-house by GWM.

The new engine choice and transmission lift the Tank 300’s measly 2500kg braked towing capacity to a still lacking but acceptable 3000kg, however there’s been no official mention of a payload increase.

Data sourced from Redbook however shows the diesel to have a significantly improved theoretical payload over the petrol, when the kerb weight is subtracted from the gross vehicle mass (GVM) – 600kg vs 346kg.

Also yet to be confirmed is if GWM Australia has addressed the Tank 300’s tendency to nose-dive so hard under heavy braking that it temporarily lifts the rear axle off the ground.

Nevertheless, the diesel 300s match the corresponding hybrids in terms of standard equipment and technology, with highlights on the Lux grade including 17-inch alloys, LED exterior lighting, power-adjustable front seats, faux leather upholstery, a 12.3-inch infotainment and digital cockpit displays, smartphone mirroring, a nine-speaker sound system, sunroof, 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control and a locking rear differential.

Features not offered on the petrol Lux comprise front cross traffic alert with auto braking, highway assist, digital radio, memory for the wing mirrors and driver's seat, wireless Apple CarPlay, a rear row children monitor, an auto parking system, reverse assist and six front and rear parking sensors.

The Ultra builds on this with Nappa leather, 18-inch wheels, heated and cooled front seats with massage function for the driver, premium audio system, 64-colour ambient lighting, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, wireless charging and a front differential lock.

All Tank 300s are covered by a seven-year/unlimited-kilometre factory warranty with seven year’s roadside assistance included in the asking price and seven years capped price servicing.
