2025 KGM SsangYong Torres Hybrid set for Australia

New electrified medium SUV will come Down Under, but we don’t know when

A hybrid version of the box-fresh KGM SsangYong Torres medium SUV has made its global debut and is an odds-on bet for Australia.

According to KGM SsangYong Australia product and PR manager John Taylor, the local operation is planning to have the 2025 KGM SsangYong Torres HEV “here as soon as it’s available”, though a concrete timeline is yet to be locked in.

The Korean brand is also yet to publicise the hybrid’s combined power and torque figures, however the inclusion of a 112kW/280Nm, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine has been confirmed along with an ‘e-DHT’ transmission and a 1.83kWh lithium iron phosphate battery.

The combination will supposedly return a combined fuel consumption of 6.4-6.6L/100km depending on the variant, while CO2 emissions are pegged at 101-105g/km.

At this stage the Torres HEV has only been shown in front-drive form, but that’s hardly new for the segment seeing as the Kia Sportage, GWM-Haval H6 and Honda CR-V hybrids are all offered here exclusively as front-wheel-drives.

Unlike the H6 however, the Torres HEV doesn’t distinguish itself from its internal combustion brethren with a unique exterior design – the only indication of its electrified heart is a ‘hybrid’ badge on the tailgate, and it’s a similar story inside the cabin save for the hybrid-specific graphics on the digital interfaces.

Odds are at least two hybrid variants will be offered here, possibly three, as the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard bears down on the market, ready to issue credits and penalties as of July 1.

A three-pronged hybrid line-up would mirror that of the petrol range and almost certainly comprise the familiar ELX, Adventure and Ultimate trim levels.

With the Torres EVX also expected to make landfall in 2025, KGM SsangYong could become the first manufacturer to offer petrol, hybrid and battery-electric versions of the same model in the mainstream medium SUV segment as opposed to the usual petrol and hybrid strategy.

Naturally, the hybrids will cost more than the petrol grades, but we’ll have to wait and see by how much.
