2025 Mazda CX-80 leaked

Familiar shape of all-new large seven-seat SUV revealed in patent filings ahead of its Australian release in late 2024

Patent images of the 2025 Mazda CX-80 have been uncovered by the Mazda CX-70 forum, providing our first look at the upcoming large seven-seat SUV without camouflage.

The CX-80 is set to slot into the reinvigorated Mazda SUV range as a seven-seat version of the five-seat CX-60 mid-size SUV, and so it’s no surprise that’s exactly what it looks like.

Visually analogous to its CX-60, CX-70 and CX-90 siblings, the CX-80 will be positioned below the bigger CX-90 seven-seat flagship, and alongside its five-seat CX-70 sibling, which is also due on sale here by the end of this year.

That will make Mazda’s new three-row family SUV a belated replacement for the discontinued CX-8 and CX-9, and a direct rival the Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento and Toyota Kluger.

Given the smaller Mazda CX-60 is priced between $59,800 and $87,252, price points are expected to be relatively lofty, especially when compared to seven-seat competitors like the Sorento (from $50,680), Skoda Kodiaq (from $56,490) and Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace (from $45,990).

With a circa-$70K entry-level price forecast, the CX-80 is more likely to align with the Hyundai Palisade (from $66,800) and Nissan Pathfinder (from $71,490).

So while the CX-80 will join the CX-90 as Mazda’s second new-generation seven-seat SUV, it won’t command the same price premium as the brand’s flagship SUV ($74,400 to $100,935).

Based on the same modular rear-biassed all-wheel drive platform dubbed Mazda Large Product Group (MLP, not LPG), the new CX-80 is expected to offer similar powertrains to the CX-60 and CX-90, including inline six-cylinder turbo-petrol and turbo-diesel engines and, perhaps later, a four-cylinder plug-in hybrid system.

The CX-80’s front-end design appears to maintain a laser-like focus on the Japanese brand’s new premium design language; the headlights, grille and front fascia all look eerily similar to those of the CX-60, CX-70 and CX-90.

Only the rear side windows appear to be different, while the interior look and layout is also likely to be a carbon copy of the CX-60’s, albeit with an extra pai of seats.

Mazda’s revitalised SUV range almost hit its sales targets in 2023, when the CX-60 found an average of 466 homes per month and the CX-90 managed around 120 sales per month, compared to official expectations of 500 and 150 monthly sales respectively.

Mazda Australia managing director Vinesh Bhindi told carsales earlier this month that he expects the brand’s new SUVs to build sales momentum over time.

“I think there is still potential left that we will uncover in the time to come and when all four nameplates are in the market,” he said of the CX-60 and CX-90 already on sale in Australia, and the CX-70 and CX-90 to follow by the end of this year.
