The heavily revised 2025 Mercedes-AMG G 63 4x4 will start from $368,400 plus on-road costs when Australian order books open on November 27, with the first customer cars due early next year.
Now almost five thousand dollars more expensive than its predecessor, the G 63 will once again be the only G-Class variant offered in Oz (for now) but brings with it a swathe of new gear and technology.
The work begins under the bonnet where the G 63’s familiar twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 gains Benz’s 48-volt mild hybrid system, and while power and torque remain pegged at 430kW/850Nm, AMG says the new electrification measures can temporarily provide an extra 15kW/200Nm.
Acceleration remains brisk, with 0-100km/h taking just 4.3 seconds using the optional Race Start system – or 4.4 seconds without it.
Perhaps more noticeable than the mild-hybrid tech is the optional AMG Active Ride Control that can cancel out body roll in corners and decouple the sway bars to provide greater axle articulation off-road.
Combined with AMG Ride Control adaptive dampers that individually alter the damping for each wheel, the rugged G 63 narrows the gap between it and more road-focused SUVs when it comes to black-top driving without compromising its off-road capability.
Other new tech includes Mercedes’ latest MBUX infotainment system that features augmented sat-nav, a premium Burmester 3D surround sound system, a new centre console touchpad, haptic steering wheel controllers, keyless-go, transparent bonnet, wireless phone charging and temperature-controlled cupholders.
When off-road, there’s a shortcut button on the centre console for the ‘Offroad Cockpit’ that displays engine temperature, topographical date, geocoordinates and compass directions and allows the driver to pre-arm the 4x4 system for what lies beneath using the AMG Dynamic Select system.
Few will spot the subtle exterior changes that differentiate the MY25 G-wagon and the model it replaces, but look hard enough and you might spot the revised air intakes with three vertical louvres, a new AMG crest badge on the bonnet, new cladding on the A-pillar, subtle roof spoiler and chrome fuel filler cap.
The whole package now rolls on 22-inch forged wheels with Australian cars enhanced further by the AMG Night Package: dark chrome grille, dark bumper inserts and mirror caps and moodier finishes for the bash plate, headlight units and exterior trim strips.
Inside the cabin you’ll find an AMG Performance steering wheel, Nappa leather upholstery, sliding glass sunroof, Microcut suede-effect headliner, open pore ash wood and piano black lacquer trim.
Headline driver aids include a 360-degree camera, blind spot assist, adaptive cruise control with lane-keep assist and a long list of others.
Customers can choose from a sea of optional extras and packs, including but not limited to the choice of 21 leather upholsteries, four alloy wheel designs, five interior trims and three seatbelt colours.
There are 28 external paint colours to choose from.
