UPDATED, 4 July 2025: MG Australia has dropped pricing on a range of its hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, announcing drive-away prices that see the plug-less HS Hybrid+ start at $42,990 drive-away for the entry-level Excite.
Due in showrooms from September, a range-topping HS Hybrid+ Essence will also be offered at $46,990 drive-away.
The pair of hybrids will join HS family outlined below, which consists of petrol-powered variants and plug-in hybrid or ‘Super Hybrid’ variants, the latter of which will arrive later in 2025 from just over $50k, around $2000 less than first promised.
The new drive-away prices are effective from July 1, 2025, with the HS Super Hybrid Excite priced at $50,990 drive-away and the high-spec Essence at $54,990.
MG is yet to announce key details of its Toyota RAV4-rivalling HS Hybrid+ range.
ORIGINAL, 29 May 2025: Hot on the heels of the local boss’ fighting words, the 2025 MG HS Super Hybrid has been priced from $52,990 drive-away and will enter local showrooms this September in two forms.
Predictably, those two forms are Excite and Essence, the latter carrying a premium of $3000 on account of its extra equipment, yet both versions manage to either match or undercut the competition from BYD, GWM and Mitsubishi.
MG claims its first mainstream plug-in hybrid system “has been designed specifically for Australian conditions”, comprising a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, an e-motor and a starter generator which yield a combined output of 220kW/350Nm.
The motor is fed by a 24.7kWh battery pack that provides up to 135km of NDEC electric cruising range and plays a key role in returning a combined fuel consumption of 0.7L/100km – a full battery and full petrol tank will supposedly yield a total fuel range of more than 1000km.
If the battery is depleted, the powertrain will behave like a plugless hybrid and will still return a claimed fuel consumption of 4.5L/100km.
Standard equipment details will be announced closer to the model’s arrival in Q3, however the turbo-petrol HS has been here since September last year which gives us a rather good guide as to what to expect.
On the Excite, anticipate there to be 19-inch alloy wheels, satellite navigation, PVC upholstery, front fog lights, a 360-degree camera, keyless entry and start, smartphone mirroring, a six-speaker sound system, power-adjustable driver’s seat, adaptive cruise control and a pair of 12.3-inch screens.
The Essence will almost certainly build on this with a wireless charging pad, eight-speaker sound system, rear privacy glass, door mirror and driver’s seat memory functions, power-adjustable passenger seat, heated front seats, glasses box and a panoramic sunroof.
