The all-new Smart #5 has been teased testing off-road in Australia ahead of its global reveal here on August 28.
Already revealed in full via a leak in China, we know the reborn EV brand's largest and most powerful product to date will rival the likes of the Tesla Model Y and BYD Atto 3 when it arrives in Australian dealers, potentially before the end of this year.
Early details suggest that the Smart #5 will measure 4705mm long, 1920mm wide, and stand 1705mm tall, with a generous 2900mm wheelbase.
That will make it taller but shorter than the Tesla Model Y, with a 10mm longer wheelbase, suggesting it should beat its US rival for interior space.
The earlier leak suggests that when it's unwrapped, there will be four powertrains available, starting with a rear-drive/single-motor version with either 250kW or 267kW. A pair of all-wheel drive/dual-motor versions will be offered produce either 432kW or up to 475kW.
While the rear-drive models will use lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry, the dual-motor versions will get more expensive nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries that are expected to have an energy density of around 100kWh.
With the latter, expect the Smart #5 to cover up to 500km, even though it tips the scales at a hefty 2450kg.
Acceleration figures will be released at launch, but top speed is either 200km/h or 210km/h, depending on the version.
All Smart #5 vehicles will have an 800-volt electrical architecture that will be able to charge the 100kWh battery from 10-80 percent in as little as 15 minutes.
Sadly, the latest camouflaged Smart #5 has lost the original #5 Concept's roof-mounted light bar, all-terrain tires, bonnet cables, and towering ride height.
No images of the cabin have been released but it's thought the Smart #5 will come with a large digital instrument cluster and two further large touch-screens for the infotainment and front passenger.
Smart Automobile has announced its return to the Australian market, confirming it will relaunch here earlier than expected in the third quarter of 2024 with both the Smart #1 and Smart #3.
More teases will be released in the coming days ahead of the Australian global reveal event that will be livestreamed on August 28.
