The Suzuki Vitara lineage is one rich with heritage and fandom, and while the latest softer-core Vitara small SUV lives on, we’re still waiting for a return of a larger XL-sized Grand Vitara – with proper 4x4 off-road ability and, fingers crossed, a V6 engine.
We’ve not seen the Grand Vitara in Australian showrooms since 2019, with the latest generation emerging overseas in 2022 as a soft-roading clone based on the Toyota Urban Cruiser and sharing plenty with the regular Vitara – including similar downsized dimensions.
What’s more, the Suzuki XL-7 – a stretched seven-seat version of the Grand Vitara – has also been AWOL since 2006, so it’s surely time to beat the drum (once again) for a seven-seat 4x4 off-road SUV from the Japanese brand, particularly as the market segment is going from strength to strength.
A new render produced by SRK Designs has provided the spark, looking every bit the three-row Grand Vitara that would make a real impact in Australia, with a stance that puts us in mind of the Lexus TX.
There’s certainly more grandeur and opulence compared to the overseas-market Grand Vitara, with the SRK version’s Lexus-inspired front-end, muscular lines and lashings of chrome, not to mention the large-diameter diamond-cut alloy wheels.
The dimensions of this rendered Grand Vitara XL-7 are obviously the subject of speculation, but we’d place it alongside the latest Mitsubishi Outlander and the Skoda Kodiaq – two family wagons blurring the lines between the medium and large SUV segments with their seven-seat layouts.
We’re sure Suzuki Australia would love to get its hands on such a vehicle were it ever produced, and while there’s no official indication from Japan that the car-maker will ever head down the bigger-bodied and harder-core path again, the team at SRK Designs might have the inside running on Japan HQ’s product plans.
“Here is my rendering for the highly anticipated Suzuki Grand Vitara XL, a seven-seater or six-seater hybrid SUV which will be a spacious and feature-packed family vehicle,” SRK Designs said with their posting.
“The bigger version of the Grand Vitara has been redesigned to differentiate it from the regular five-seater model.”
Let’s see if there’s any strength to the rumours, or any traction with these renders…
