The all-new 2025 Toyota 4Runner 4x4 off-roader will be revealed in the US tonight as the wagon follow-up to the latest Toyota Tacoma pick-up, paving the way for the next-generation Toyota Fortuner due in Australia in 2026.
The incoming all-new 2025 Toyota HiLux is expected to share much of its DNA with the Tacoma, both in terms of engineering and design, so the next Toyota Fortuner should have similarly close ties with the 4Runner.
Toyota USA has released a few official teaser images ahead of the 4Runner’s debut, which show key details of the body (chunky lines, blocky tail-lights) and interior (massive infotainment screen), along with an innovative powered rear window.
A hard-core Trailhunter model has also been confirmed.
While we don’t have long to wait before we see the new 4Runner in full, a fresh batch of unofficial renders have surfaced out of Europe – and we have to say that we’d be stoked if the next Fortuner looks even vaguely similar.
The new 4Runner is expected to share powertrains with the Tacoma – namely, a 2.4-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder (207kW/430Nm) and a 2.4-litre turbocharged petrol-electric hybrid developing 243kW/630Nm.
It’s unclear whether the new Fortuner will inherit the turbo-petrol mill for the Australian market, however the hybrid powertrain is a strong chance as it’s already earmarked for the inbound Lexus GX and Toyota Prado.
That said, the Fortuner’s core engine will almost certainly be the new Prado and facelifted HiLux’s mild-hybrid 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, which produces an unchanged 150kW/500Nm.
