The 2025 Toyota GR Corolla hot hatch has arrived Down Under armed with the eagerly anticipated eight-speed automatic transmission and an accompanying price rise.
Still offered with a six-speed manual by default, Toyota’s hottest hatch now starts from $67,990 plus on-road costs while the new automatic version opens from $70,490 – undercutting the $70,590 but soon to be updated VW Golf R by a mere $100.
Retaining the singular GTS trim level, the 2025 GR Corolla automatic comes armed with four drive modes, launch control, paddle shifters, adaptive cruise control and parking support brake with object and vehicle detection.
Its introduction coincides with the arrival of a broader facelift which brings a wider front grille, new air curtains, a new front suspension member and a carbon-fibre roof which combine to shave 13kg off the kerb weight.
Other new features include active noise control and an updated infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility – the rest of the standard equipment list has been carried over.
An extra 30Nm has also been extracted from the turbocharged 1.6-litre three-cylinder petrol engine to boost outputs to 221kW/400Nm, however Toyota is yet to confirm any performance improvements for the manual or even an official 0-100km/h time for the automatic.
For background, the pre-update manual could stop the clock in 5.3 seconds, so there’s every chance the auto could dip below the five-second barrier with the help of its launch control system.
