2025 Toyota Prado order book opens soon

More powertrain details revealed but deliveries of highly-anticipated Prado pushed back

New details on the 2025 Toyota Prado have emerged today including fuel economy figures, confirming the big, blocky bush-basher to be more efficient than its predecessor.

The order book will open in late August, when the 280-odd Toyota dealers around Australia will officially start taking deposits from customers to secure their vehicle.

That’s the good news.

The bad news is that customer deliveries have been pushed back from the third quarter to the fourth quarter, meaning those at the very front of the queue may not get their vehicles until October, November or possibly even December.

Furthermore, it’s understood that some Toyota dealers have already been taking deposits for the Prado before the importer officially opens the order book, which may further extend wait times for those who don’t yet have a place in the queue.

This is despite Toyota Australia attempting to avoid a repeat of the previous Prado’s extended delivery wait times of two-plus-years for some model-grades.

Despite price rises of almost $10,000 for base grade Prado vehicles – check out the full Prado price list, the new diesel-powered large SUV is almost certain to be a sell-out success for the foreseeable future, given Toyota Australia is predicting orders in the tens of thousands.

Claimed fuel economy figures for the 2025 Toyota Prado have now been confirmed, the vehicle’s 48-volt mild-hybrid four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine (150kW/500Nm) consuming diesel at a rate of 7.6L/100km according to Toyota, making it more frugal than its 7.9L/100km predecessor.

The main reason for the improved economy is the advent of the 48-volt mild-hybrid system, an engine stop-start function that shuts down the four-cylinder diesel when stopped at traffic lights, stop signs and when stationary, along with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Comprising a small motor generator (8.4kW/65Nm) that “helps provide extra assistance when accelerating from a standing start,” says Toyota, it also works when decelerating, feeding energy back into the 48-volt battery.

Toyota says the motor generator and is “driven by a high-strength belt with a two-arm tensioner and layer of fabric on the rib side to help prevent slippage in wet conditions,” and is located high up in the engine bay, allowing the Prado to retain its 700mm wading depth.

Although its trades heavily on its off-road trail-blazer image, Toyota reckons the Prado makes the biggest fuel consumption reductions in urban environs and at lower speeds, where the official fuel figures show a drop to 8.5L/100km, compared to 9.6L/100km for its predecessor.

Fuel use on the highway cycle is unchanged at 7.0L/100km.

Given it has a 110-litre diesel fuel tank, it should have a theoretical highway cruising range of more than 1500km.

Another 17.4-litre tank will be dedicated to AdBlue, a fluid designed to reduce the noxiousness of diesel tailpipe emissions. The Prado will be the first Toyota product in Australia requiring the AdBlue additive.

There is a more potent 2.4-litre turbo-petrol hybrid powertrain (243kW/630Nm) available in the Prado overseas, where it’s also known as the Toyota LandCruiser 250 Series, but the potent petrol-electric version is unlikely to be sold in Australia.
