UPDATE, 24/07/2025: VW Australia has announced its new Tayron large SUV will start from $48,290 plus on-road cost.
That opening price is predictably for the entry-level 110TSI Life and rises to $53,990 for the gutsier and all-wheel drive 150TSI Life.
The penultimate 150TSI Elegance meantime starts from $59,490, building to $73,490 for the flagship 195TSI R-Line.
ORIGINAL, 03/06/2025: The Hyundai Santa Fe and Mazda CX-90 are about to face stiff new competition.
Enter the 2025 Volkswagen Tayron, an upmarket seven-seat SUV that rolls into showrooms soon with turbo-petrol power and premium cabin appointments.
Volkswagen Australia today confirmed local specs for the Tayron, which replaces the Tiguan Allspace and sits between the new Tiguan and the Touareg. Think of it as the middle child with serious aspirations. VW is calling it a "mini Touareg", and while pricing is still under wraps, most other details are now locked in.
All variants come generously equipped: powered tailgate, 360-degree cameras, a 12.9-inch central touchscreen, and VW’s Digital Cockpit Pro. Alloy wheels, keyless entry, wireless phone charging, semi-autonomous driving aids, nine airbags, and traffic-sign-based speed limit updates are all standard.

Unlike in some markets, diesel and hybrid powertrains won’t be available at launch. But Volkswagen Australia has previously confirmed interest in bringing the Tayron plug-in hybrid Down Under, alongside a PHEV Tiguan.
These PHEV versions pair a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder with an electric motor, 19kWh battery, and six-speed dual-clutch auto, producing up to 200kW and offering 100km of electric-only range.
The range opens with the 110TSI Life, powered by a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder (110kW/250Nm). It’s front-wheel drive, comes standard with seven seats, and uses the same wet-clutch seven-speed auto as the Golf GTI. Towing capacity is rated at 1800kg – decent for its class.
Want more shove? The 150TSI (available in Life and Elegance trims) bumps things up with a 2.0-litre turbo (150kW/320Nm) and all-wheel drive. These models also tow up to 2500kg and add VW’s adaptive chassis control system, DCC Pro, which can stiffen or soften the suspension on the fly.
Here’s the twist: you can get a five-seat Tayron Life with a massive 885-litre boot. But if you want AWD and seven seats, you’ll need to step up to the Elegance. Still, folding down the third row gives you 850L – 150L more than the outgoing Tiguan Allspace.
The 150TSI Elegance adds leather trim, massaging seats, heating everywhere (including the steering wheel), and high-end LED lighting that’ll make the neighbours raise an eyebrow.
And if you’re feeling spicy, the 195TSI R-Line tops the range with 195kW and 400Nm from its uprated 2.0 turbo. It’ll sprint from 0-100km/h in 6.1 seconds – Golf GTI territory – but with room for seven. It also scores 20-inch wheels, a larger 15.0-inch touchscreen, HD Matrix LED headlights, head-up display, Harman Kardon premium audio, and full R-Line styling.
Measuring 250mm longer than the new Tiguan, with a 110mm stretch in wheelbase, the Tayron boasts proper family-hauling credentials.
At around 4770mm in length, it’s slightly shorter than the Hyundai Santa Fe (4830mm) and Subaru Outback (4870mm), and Volkswagen is categorising it as a large SUV given it’s bigger than most mid-size seven-seat SUVs such as the Nissan X-TRAIL (4680mm).
Pricing? VW is keeping quiet but expect a spread from 'family-friendly' to 'getting ambitious'. The 110TSI Life will likely target Hyundai Santa Fe and Subaru Outback buyers, while the 150TSI trims are expected to face off against the Mazda CX-90.
At the top end, the 195TSI R-Line could edge into luxury territory. A near-$80K Tayron? Maybe. A $90K one? Probably not. That’s Lexus RX money, and Volkswagen will need to make a compelling case.
Still, with the Tiguan R-Line already in $70K-plus territory, the Tayron’s top spec is unlikely to come cheap.
Six paint colours will be offered, including the delightfully extra Ultra Violet Premium Metallic. The others? Pure White, Oyster Silver Metallic, Dolphin Grey Metallic, Night Shade Blue Metallic, and Grenadilla Black Metallic.
A panoramic glass roof will be available on the 150TSI Elegance and 195TSI R-Line, and buyers can opt for the Sound & Vision package (150TSI Elegance) or Black Style pack (195TSI R-Line) to dial things up.
We’ll update this page once Volkswagen Australia reveals full pricing.
