The Finer Details

The star of the show, the engine, is said to have undergone extensive engineering updates aimed at futureproofing it amid stricter efficiency regulations globally.

The updated V8 gets a new flat-plane crankshaft and modified intake camshaft, as well as updates to the fuel-injection system and exhaust after-treatment tech.

But those hoping for more performance will be disappointed because despite the revisions, outputs remain unchanged at 450kW/850Nm, with peak torque available between 2500rpm and 4500rpm.

Supporting the V8 is an updated 48V mild-hybrid system that AMG says contributes up to 17kW/205Nm to – temporarily – improve power delivery at low speeds, energy recuperation and stop-start refinement.

Mercedes-AMG claims an identical 3.9-second 0-100km/h sprint time for the GLE 63 S, while the larger GLS 63 continues with the same 4.2-second claim. Both are electronically limited to 280km/h.

Power is pushed to all four corners via AMG’s variable Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system and an electronically controlled locking rear differential designed to maximise traction and agility.

An array of AMG drive modes include Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Trail, Slippery and Individual.

Speaking of, a redeveloped AMG Performance exhaust system now features active valves so drivers can tailor the soundtrack from ‘discreet’ in Comfort mode to… less discreet in Sport+.

AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL active roll stabilisation comes standard, while AMG’s RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension continues with adaptive damping and variable ride-height functionality; able to lower the vehicle at higher speeds or raise it by up to 55mm in Trail mode for light off-roading.

Visually, the large SUV pair feature a redesigned front end with an upsized AMG-specific grille, reworked air intakes and a new AMG lighting signature, while quad exhaust outlets and a distinctive diffuser treatment further differentiate the flagship variants at the rump.

Inside, both models nab Merc’s updated MB.OS operating system with AMG-specific displays, while the latest-gen AMG steering wheel also features.

A host of upholstery options include Nappa leather in black, beige, brown or red pepper, while various trim elements (carbon fibre or aluminium) and exclusive paint colours are also available.

The Road Ahead

Mercedes is yet to confirm pricing and finer spec detail for the updated GLE 63 S and GLS 63, but given the array of updates, expect an uptick on the current models’ $266,900 and $299,900 (each plus on-road costs) respective starting prices.

The updated pair are expected to arrive Down Under later this year.
