The all-new 2026 Subaru Outback and more rugged Outback Wilderness will be unwrapped at the New York motor show on April 16.
To build anticipation, the seventh-generation Subaru Outback has been teased playing in the dirt, with the all-new high-riding wagon’s new boxier styling mostly obscured by a cloud of sand and gravel.
Announcing that it will show off both the regular Outback and the rough-road-ready Outback Wilderness, it’s thought the latter will feature a high-lift suspension kit, retuned suspension and all-terrain tyres, plus plenty of extra unbody protection.
Under the bonnet, expect the next Outback to be powered by naturally aspirated and turbocharged flat-four petrol engines, as well as a hybrid powertrain.
Early reports suggest for its seventh outing the Outback will abandon its Liberty wagon roots and adopt more of an SUV profile and an unashamed boxier look.
Another takeaway from our first glimpse for the new Outback is squared-off arches that get protective black plastic.
While the outgoing Outback has been produced in the US and Japan, it’s thought the entire production of the Outback will now move to Japan, opening the door to the Wilderness version to the Australian market for the first time. Originally, the most rugged version was only made at Subaru’s Indiana plant.
In Australia the Subaru Outback remains a strong seller, with Subaru delivering an impressive 10,277 examples last year. That makes it the brand’s third best-selling model after the Forester (13,445) and Crosstrek (11,545).
Stay tuned, as it’s thought Subaru will release yet another tease of the Outback ahead of its looming launch in New York.
