2026 Toyota LandCruiser FJ finally shown

Workmate petrol power, mechanical 4x4 system and concept looks headline Toyota’s new baby LandCruiser

The News

The long-awaited 2026 Toyota LandCruiser FJ compact 4x4 has finally made it global debut, but at this stage it’s only been confirmed for Japan.

The Key Details

  • Looks almost identical to the Compact Cruiser EV concept
  • Underpinned by IMV ladder-frame platform
  • Offers as much wheel articulation as the LandCruiser 70 Series
  • No electrified powertrains or current plans for Australia

The Finer Details

Powering the new downsized LandCruiser is Toyota’s venerable 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol engine good for 120kW/246Nm – hardly earth-shattering but considerably more than a Suzuki Jimny.

The powerplant is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and a part time (2H, 4H, 4L) 4x4 system.

Donning a design clearly derived from the Compact Cruiser EV concept, the reborn FJ measures 4575mm long, 1855mm wide, 1960mm tall and sits on a 2580mm wheelbase, making it roughly the same size as the current RAV4.

Key off-road specs and capabilities including ground clearance, geometry, wading depth etc are all yet to be announced, though we do know there’ll predictably only be seating for five.

The interior is headlined by a widescreen infotainment unit, digital instrument cluster and all the chunky controls you’d expect of what’s largely being touted as a miniature Prado.

The Road Ahead

Overseas reports claim Toyota doesn’t have any plans to electrify the new FJ, which could ultimately rule it out of our market as NVES targets tighten and the brand’s local division work on hybridising its portfolio.

“Toyota Australia continuously explores opportunities to evolve our vehicle line up, however we have no current plans to introduce the Land Cruiser FJ to our market,” a Toyota Australia spokesperson said in a statement. There have been rumours of a turbo-diesel powertrain being in the works, but we’ll have to wait and see if it’s clean enough to make the cut Down Under, especially since the FJ won’t be on sale in Japan until mid-2026.
