Volkswagen’s design boss has teased the exterior design of the second-generation T-Roc R ahead of its global release in 2027, with overseas outlets reporting the inclusion of mild-hybrid tech.
Adorned in the signature ‘Lapiz Blue Metallic’ hue, the upcoming performance compact SUV was previewed in an Instagram post by Volkswagen’s head of design Andreas Mindt over the weekend, showcasing the future model’s front and rear apron design.
Unsurprisingly, it looks like an angrier version of the previously revealed T-Roc R-Line; sitting lower to the ground on sportier wheels with an aggressive rear diffuser and quad exhaust outlets headlining the rear end.

The post roughly coincides with a British media preview which reportedly confirmed a mild-hybrid version of the current Golf R’s turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine (245kW/420m), which would feature under the bonnet in conjunction with the hatch’s variable all-wheel drive (AWD) system and seven-speed dual-clutch (DC) automatic transmission.
British outlets were even shown a camouflaged development vehicle, the images of which have not been circulated by VW’s public channels.

Autocar has speculated that the second-generation T-Roc R will enter production in October 2027, meaning it’s unlikely to arrive in Australia before mid-2028.
As emission restrictions get ever tighter and consumer preferences continue to swing toward hybrids, there’s a reasonable chance the next T-Roc R will be one of the last traditional compact performance vehicles left on the market.
