It's testament to Toyota's understated way of marking occasions that it has announced a new exterior colour and a new interior colour scheme for its RAV4 SUV, which officially notches up 20 years on sale in Australia this year.
Other companies would be hyping this milestone through the roof, but not Toyota. No, Toyota clients get to order their new RAV4 Cruiser with a Terracotta-and-Black interior colour scheme, or they can order a RAV4 Cruiser or GXL in the new exterior colour ('Inferno') – and that's it.
Maybe the new colours are the big news – not the 20th anniversary of the vehicle that arguably fired the first shot in the soft-road SUV war that continues to wage all around the world.
Developed originally from a concept car unveiled in 1989, the production RAV4 burst out of the blocks in 1994 as a three-door wagon. Cabrio and five-door models followed. Now in its fourth generation, the RAV4 sells in 150 countries around the world, and global sales to date have exceeded five million units.
Over the course of its 20-year sales history in Australia, the RAV4 has sold 228,677 units – with no sign of its popularity abating. Last year the RAV4 set a new personal best, selling 16,983 units in Australia. For 2014 so far, the sales rate is 6.2 per cent ahead of the same period last year, meaning the RAV4 is on track to set another sales record this year.
"A truly pioneering car, RAV4 set the trend for crossover vehicles that combine the driving comfort of passenger cars with all-wheel-drive capability and versatile bodies," said Tony Cramb, executive director of sales and marketing at Toyota Australia.
"Over the years, RAV4 has retained its fresh approach to design and fun-to-drive character while evolving to capture emerging trends as the SUV market has changed and matured," Cramb was quoted saying in a press release.
