Citroen 2CV gets the cubist look

Don't know much about art, but know what you like? This Citroen could be just the thing to grace your courtyard at home

What can you say about a chap who rebuilds a Citroen 2CV as an homage to famed artist, Pablo Picasso? Other than the fact that he has too much time on his hands, for one thing...

British artist and artisan, Andy Saunders is more than passingly familiar with the works of the Spanish artist -- and tools of the trade like the angle grinder, gas axe and spray gun.

Saunders was plainly motivated by Citroen's naming of its C4-based people mover, the C4 Picasso. He got to wondering how a well-known Citroen model would have looked if Picasso had worked in the French manufacturer's styling department at the time. The basis for his study was a 2CV (pictured).

"I decided to try and blur the line between car design and art by using Picasso as an inspiration," Saunders explains. The inspiration for his startling revision of the 2CV came from Picasso's work, "Portrait of Dora Maar".

Converting the 2CV required 1200 hours of work and, involved widening the body by 152mm on the right side, moving the boot off-centre and rebuilding the bonnet from 12 individual components. Headlights, grille and doors have all been relocated and the vehicle was painted in colours used by Picasso for his two paintings, 'The Three Musicians' and 'Still life on a table'.

The Picasso 2CV is up for sale and will be auctioned at RM Auctions' Automobiles of London on October 29.

It paves the way for other tributes to famous public figures -- we're looking forward to seeing a 12-metre Toyota with a spinnaker and winged keel...
