918 Spyder destined for production

Porsche confirms that radical plug-in sports car will be built in limited volumes

A new breed of sports car is on the way. Fisker's Karma S pioneered the idea of a stylish, upmarket car that will be fun to drive without discharging CO2 in huge quantities.

Now Porsche has announced that it will put its own version of the concept -- the 918 Spyder -- into low-volume series production. According to the company, the decision was based on the enthusiasm shown by the general public for the concept car that was unveiled earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show.

"Production of the 918 Spyder in a limited series proves that we are taking the right approach with Porsche Intelligent Performance, featuring the combination of supreme performance and efficient drivetrain concepts," Porsche president Michael Macht was quoted as saying in the company's press release.

"We will develop the 918 Spyder in Weissach and assemble it in Zuffenhausen. This is also a very important commitment to Germany as a manufacturing base."

The production car is anticipated to emit just 70g/km of CO2 and consume 3.0L/100km, based on NEDC testing. That sort of result betters corresponding figures for the current Toyota Prius -- which is not a plug-in hybrid, it should be added. Porsche has not stated explicitly how well the car will perform but the press release puts the 918 Spyder in the "super-sports car" class.
