Off-roading is full of thrilling experiences, but it’s common for even the most seasoned drivers to find themselves stuck in sand or mud.
When this happens, a reliable set of recovery tracks (like Maxtrax) can be your best friend, offering an easy and effective way to self-recover. We’ll break down how to safely use recovery tracks to get your vehicle unstuck and back on solid ground.
Before you begin, put your vehicle in park and engage the handbrake. Ensuring your vehicle is secure is essential to keep you, your passengers, and others around you safe during the recovery process.
If you’re bogged down, reducing your tyre pressure can help increase traction. Check your tyre pressures using a gauge and adjust to a range that suits the terrain. For soft sand, a common recommendation is between 15-20 PSI, but consult your specific vehicle’s recommendations for the best results. Lowering the pressure allows your tyres to spread out and create more surface area, which can make it easier to drive over soft terrain.
Determine the best way to drive out, either forwards or in reverse. If you’re surrounded by obstacles or if the terrain ahead looks especially challenging, it may be more practical to reverse out. This simple step can save time and effort, as sometimes reversing offers a quicker route to solid ground.
Clear a path around your bogged wheels. With sand or soft dirt, you can use the underside of the recovery tracks as a makeshift shovel. Remove enough material so the tracks can fit under your wheels and catch as soon as the tyres begin to turn.
Wedge the tracks as far under the bogged tyres as possible, with the teeth facing up. Position the tracks at approximately a 45-degree angle—angled enough to provide lift but not too steep, as that could make it difficult for the tyres to grab. Pack additional sand or dirt underneath to add stability to the tracks.
Before accelerating, make sure there are no obstacles or bystanders in your path. Select low-range gear if possible for added control, and ease onto the throttle slowly to gain momentum. Maintain a steady pace—excessive acceleration can lead to wheel spin, which may damage your recovery tracks or tyres. Slow and steady wins the race here, allowing the tyres to grip and pull the vehicle out of the bogged area.
Once your vehicle is unstuck, remember to collect your tracks. They may be partially buried, so give them a firm pull or wiggle to loosen them from the sand. Properly storing your recovery tracks ensures they’re ready for the next adventure!
