AIMS: Ford announces pricing for five-star Focus

Ford gives the Australian public its first look at its all-new Focus, the five-star ANCAP rated small car to be priced from $21,990

The all-new Ford Focus has taken to the stage at the Australian International Motor Show (AIMS) in Melbourne boasting a maximum possible five-star ANCAP safety rating and slender $21,990 pricetag.

Scoring the highest possible dynamic score for child protection in both frontal and side impact collision tests, as well as excelling in the adult and pedestrian safety categories. Ford says Focus' ANCAP results reaffirms the "structural excellence" of its global C-Car platform.

Slated to go on sale in Australia in August (2011), the all-new Focus is equipped with Ford's Intelligent Protection System restraint system that includes next-generation front airbags for the driver and front passenger, as well as unique side airbags complete with shoulder vents that stay open and reduce pressure for smaller occupants.

A 'horizontal stroking' steering column reduces loads on head and chest as it collapses and retracts away from the driver in high-speed frontal impacts. Both front seats are fitted with more effective retractor pretensioners, along with belt load limiters. Rear seat passengers are protected by three-point seat belts.

"We were committed from the beginning with the all-new Focus to design and engineer a vehicle that leads the way both in terms of technology and safety," said Ford's global C-car vehicle line director, Gunnar Herrmann.

"The inherent strength of our new Focus is the structural rigidity of the body and our extensive use of high-strength steels."

Ford used AIMS to announce pricing for the new range. Available in two body styles – sedan and hatch – with three powertrains and in four specification levels, Focus features the same starting price as the outgoing entry-level LV Series Focus CL, despite a notable increase in specification and equipment.

The new base model Focus Ambiente comes to the market at $21,990 (MRLP) for the five-speed manual transmission.

Next up, Focus Trend, which replaces Focus LX, features cruise control, front fog lamps, alloy wheels and the optional Convenience Pack which includes rain-sensing wipers, auto headlamps, electrochromatic rear-view mirros and ‘follow me home' lighting.

Focus Sport, which replaces Focus Zetec, includes all of Trend's features (including those found in the optional Convenience Pack), as well as sports suspension, sports front seats, 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control and a Sony high-end audio system with 4.2-inch colour screen and multi-function display (MFD).

Topping the range, Focus Titanium, which replaces Focus Ghia, adds Ford's Active Park Assist self-parking system, keyless entry, starter button, partial leather seat trim, heated front seats and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Titanium models can be further enhanced by the optional Sports Executive Pack which includes adaptive cruise control, bi-xenon headlamps (with LED daytime running lamps and static cornering lamps) and an electric tilt and slide sunroof.

"In every world market where Focus competes, customers are looking for expressive design, affordable innovation, superior quality, responsive performance and exceptional fuel efficiency," said Ford Australia CEO, Bob Graziano.

"In Australia, the all-new Focus presents all these elements in one outstanding package. It raises the bar in all these areas, which will not only delight our existing customers but also expand the appeal of the Focus brand to a whole new generation of Ford customers."

The all-new Ford Focus goes on sale in Australia in August.
