Hyundai has given the best indication yet of its plans to introduce a range of upgraded SR models by revealing performance versions of the i30 and Accent at the 2012 Australian International Motor Show in Sydney today.
The show cars are still concepts but Hyundai Australia says: "The Accent SR and new-generation i30 SR represent the company’s forward thinking and intention to deliver fun, affordable, and desirable performance vehicles."
Featuring both equipment and engine performance upgrades, the SR models are both naturally aspirated. The i30 SR features a 2.0-litre GDi (direct-injected petrol) engine rated at 130kW and 213Nm, while the Accent is powered by 1.6-litre GDi engine with 103kW and 167Nm.
In the case of the i30 SR, these outputs represent useful increases of 18 and 20 per cent for power and torque respectively. The Accent SR adds 13 per cent more power and seven per cent more torque.
“The SR range offers Hyundai the opportunity to gauge customer interest in the expansion of our successful passenger car models into the sports space,” said Hyundai Motor Company Australia Marketing Director, Oliver Mann.
“Our intent would be to deliver driver enjoyment over outright speed and to offer sporty drivability and everyday practicality in an affordable package,” added Mr Mann.
Hyundai's SR AIMS concepts also featured chassis and equipment tweaks. The i30 SR featured 17-inch alloy wheels and detailed changes including bodywork and interior tweaks, while the Accent rolled on 16-inch alloys, featured a larger rear spoiler and special paint and interior equipment changes.
The SR range's future depends on you – the new car buyer. Hyundai says it will be "evaluating the response from the public as part of its business case review for each model, ahead of possible introductions in 2013".
