Mazda has used the Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne to premiere its environmentally focussed SKYACTIV engine and transmission technology.
Debuting beneath the bonnet of the revised Mazda3, the all-new, high-efficiency direct injection SKYACTIV-G 2.0-litre will be sold concurrently with the MZR 2.0-litre unit found across the current model range.
Mated to the all-new SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission, Mazda says the new mill is two kilograms lighter than the MZR engine. It also boasts a raft of state-of-the-art internals designed to improve efficiency while at the same time delivering more power.
With a total output of 113kW/194Nm, the SKYACTIV engine represents a five per cent increase in power and seven per cent increase in torque against the conventional motor (108/182).
Fuel economy also gets a boost, the facelifted Mazda3's SKYACTIV powertrain also coming standard with i-stop, Mazda's version of idle stop-start technology.
In Mazda's announcements at the show it avoided saying just how much fuel the updated '3 will save. The official fuel consumption figures will be announced closer to the car's launch later this year.
In debuting the new SKYACTIV technology both in Europe and locally, Mazda has claimed significant fuel savings are possible.
