AIMS: Toyota points to future

Japanese car maker set to unveil five new vehicles including funky new Yaris at the Melbourne motor show

Toyota will lay out its future at the 2011 Australian International Motor Show, presenting five latest concept and production vehicles spanning a range of market segments, from sports car to hybrids and light commercial vehicles.

The show stopper will undoubtedly be the new FT-86 II Concept car, a prototype design that provides an early look at how the new generation Toyota Celica will appear, once it arrives in the second half of 2012.

However the appearance of an updated HiLux model and two new hybrids from the Prius family should also attract plenty of attention.

As well as the Prius c Concept car and Prius v five-seat wagon, Toyota will take the wraps off its new generation Yaris light car, which is due to arrive Down Under in the fourth quarter of this year.

Showgoers will get their first look in Australia at the new Yaris, which has been given a subtle new design with clear European influences, particularly in the way the curves have given way to sharper lines around the front end.

The Yaris' interior has also been given a rejig, boasting improved standard equipment, and according to Toyota a "level of elegance and presence not normally seen in its segment". The new car is said to also provide more interior space, "particularly for rear-seat passengers".

The new HiLux ute is essentially a mid-life update, and will feature a refreshed design. It's slated for a September on-sale date.

The Prius family will be represented by two new models, the Prius v five-seater wagon and Prius c Concept, both of which are being "evaluated" for the Australian market.

Toyota says the Prius v wagon will provide motorists with a larger, more spacious petrol-electric hybrid car with more boot space for family outings. The Prius c meanwhile remains a concept car, but one that may soon become a reality, filling the space below the standard Prius as a slightly smaller, more affordable and more efficient low emission vehicle.

At this stage Toyota has not confirmed the Prius v for the Australian market.
