Alfa Romeo scraps plans for GTV, 8C and large crossover

The Italian marque has again had the rug pulled from underneath it by parent company

Alfa Romeo’s future product aspirations have been thrown into disarray following revelations parent company Fiat Chrysler (FCA) has scrapped plans for several high profile models.

In an earnings call last week – coinciding with FCA's merger with PSA – FCA inadvertently confirmed it was abandoning plans for the rear-drive GTV coupe heavily based on the Giulia, the 8C Coupe, a large crossover to sit above the Stelvio, the Giulietta facelift and two long-wheelbase variants have all been chopped.

The various products were originally confirmed in Alfa Romeo’s five-year product plan announced in 2018 by then-boss Sergio Marchionne. But in a slide that emerged from the earnings call, the respective models are all absent in Alfa Romeo’s updated 2022 product plan.

Alfa Romeo's updated product roadmap confirms the axing of several promised models.

In the words of FCA chief executive Mike Manley, Alfa Romeo’s production aspirations have been “significantly scaled back”.

“In the near term, the new portfolio for the brand is significantly scaled back with a corresponding reduction in capital spending,” Manley told reporters in the earnings call.

What has seemingly made the cut under the PSA-FCA merger is Alfa Romeo Tonale, whose origins trace to the Jeep Renegade, the updated Giulia and updated Stelvio.

There are also reports Alfa Romeo is considering a small b-segment cross-over to its mix.
