The world of artificial intelligence is rapidly changing – and challenging – traditional industries and the automotive world is not immune.
AI-generated imagery continues to create controversy, but Alfa Romeo has decided to get ahead of the curve with an intriguing car creation tool that’s already yielded some eye-popping results.
Indeed, every vehicle you see on this page was partly created by the carsales editorial team, including one of which who initially said “this sounds like ego-driven, social media-powered PR drivel” but was later pleasantly surprised by the result.
Dubbed Alfa Romeo AI, the technology is now available for all to experience at a microsite that asks the question: could artificial intelligence predict the most beautiful car in the world?
The answer is… ‘maybe’.
Anyone can head over to the web page or submit prompts via Instagram to create their own automotive Alfa AI art, which is intended to generate hype ahead of the global reveal of Alfa Romeo’s next ‘dream car’, which will make its debut at the Alfa Romeo Museum in Italy on August 31.
“The details of the car are so top secret that only a select few know what it looks like. So, without being able to show Australia the car, we’re giving people the power to dream – and letting fans predict what its new dream car will look like using AI,” says Alfa Romeo.
It’s not clear whether the new Alfa concept car will influence future production vehicles, nor whether it will be a modern or retro design, or even if it will provide clues to the brand’s next supercar, which was confirmed by Alfa Romeo design boss Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos and rumoured to be inspired by the saucy 1967 Alfa 33 Stradale.
Will any of the carsales crew be on the money?
With a little help from generative AI, carsales staff journalist Alexandra Lawrence created a gorgeous convertible with classic design cues, while senior editor Feann Torr went for an aggressive, videogame-inspired muscle car with matte-ochre yellow paint work.
Managing editor Marton Pettendy is responsible for a futuristic gull-winged work of automotive art, which demonstrates how imaginative the generative AI behind the concept car can be.
Editor-in-Chief Mike Sinclair went for a more conservative four-door Alfa Romeo supercar (no doubt to fit his pooch in), while consumer editor Nadine Armstrong’s concept design has hints of the mid-engine Alfa Romeo 8C and 4C.
The concept car sculpted by road test editor Scott Newman is perhaps the most arresting of all, its low, sleek and powerful stance backed up by curves in all the right places.
