All-new 2024 Porsche Macan EV sketched

Porsche provides best look yet at all-electric second-generation Macan SUV ahead of January 25 debut

Just days before its official unveiling, sketches of the incoming 2024 Porsche Macan EV have been released that provide our closest look yet at how the second-generation, all-electric mid-size SUV is shaping up.

Released ahead of its January 25 debut and launch in Australia in the final quarter of this year, the official design sketches of the 2024 Porsche Macan make it clear that it has taken on plenty of Taycan influence, including the four-element Matrix LED headlights.

Despite switching to an all-electric powertrain, the battery-electric Porsche SUV is also shown with three large imposing (active) air intakes.

At the rear, there’s a full-width light bar that emphasises the width of the new Macan. The same thin LED light strip was part of another earlier teaser released last week.

Below is a sculpted rear bumper and a surprisingly subtle diffuser, hinting at advanced aerodynamics.

What isn’t quite so obvious is the switch to a more rakish SUV-coupe body style and the rear pop-out tailgate spoiler.

Porsche’s designers have also avoided courting controversy, building in traditional styling cues rather than taking a more radical styling route.

“The new Macan is very clearly a Porsche – and a Macan – at first glance,” said Porsche design chief Michael Mauer.

“I would say that we have fundamentally preserved the proportions that, for Porsche, typify a sports car in the segment.

“The design has been sharpened both inside and out – the new model has an even sportier and more dynamic vibe. And driving pleasure is definitely reflected in the design.”

Unlike other markets, where the combustion-powered version will temporarily live on to ease the transition to EV, the second-generation Macan will be electric-only in Australia.

We’ve only taken a shotgun ride in a prototype version to date, but the new Macan EV will offer a big step up in performance, even over the 324kW Macan GTS.

That’s because the dual-motor version will deliver upwards of 450kW and 1000Nm of torque, while the 800-volt electrical architecture will enable fast-charging at up to 270kW.

The Macan EV will be the first electric car to be based on the Volkswagen Group’s PPE architecture, which will also be shared with the closely related Audi Q6 e-tron.

When it lands, the Porsche Macan EV will come with a 100kWh lithium-ion battery that should provide for a driving range of up to 500km.

Behind the wheel it will be business as usual, say engineers, with the Macan remaining the most capable mid-size performance SUV money can buy, even beside more affordable fast electric challengers like the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N.

Helping give it the edge is a rear-biased all-wheel drive system, adaptive air suspension and rear-wheel steering, plus the car-maker’s latest torque-vectoring tech.

Pricing for the Macan EV is still the subject of speculation, but expect a premium over the current petrol-powered SUV that starts from $93,800 plus on-road costs.
