Former Porsche CEO admits Macan mistake

Oliver Blume says axing the petrol Macan was “wrong” and reiterated a cure is coming

The News

Former Porsche CEO, now Volkswagen Group boss Oliver Blume has conceded that dropping the petrol-powered Macan was a mistake as sales continue to disappoint.

The Key Details

  • Former Porsche CEO Blume admits killing petrol Macan was a mistake
  • EV-only Macan sales lag and cost more
  • Porsche adding more electric variants
  • Petrol/hybrid Macan due in 2028

The Finer Details

In a candid interview with German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Blume confessed the decision to discontinue the petrol model and have the electric Macan fill the void was the wrong move.

“We were wrong about the Macan,” Blume said.

“Based on the data available at the time and our assessment of our markets, we would make the same decision [to go electric] again.

“Today, the situation is different.”

As many would know by now, the second-generation Macan is EV-only and as a result, significantly more expensive.

The new Macan is only Porsche’s second bespoke battery-electric model after the Taycan – and before the Cayenne Electric – and it’s not selling anywhere near as its predecessor.

The Road Ahead

Nevertheless, Porsche has continued bolstering the Macan line-up with additional variants and crucially, has confirmed it’s working on a petrol and/or hybrid alternative – the catch is it’s not due until 2028.

“We have responded and are adding combustion engines and hybrids,” Blume said.
