The all-new fourth-generation 2024 Skoda Superb sedan has been previewed for the first time ahead of its global reveal in November and launch in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2024.
We’ve already seen similar images of the wagon version of Skoda’s new-generation family car, and now the Czech brand has given us a look at the sedan.
At a time when Volkswagen Australia is abandoning traditional passenger car segments, passing on the new-generation Volkswagen Passat, for example, VW-owned Skoda will fill the void with both the Superb wagon and sedan.
Looking more of an evolution than a complete redesign, the new Superb sedan does gain fractionally more rakish rear styling which helps to make it slip through the air easier than the current car, with the drag coefficient falling to just 0.24Cd.
The next Superb is also longer and taller than before and sits on the MQB Evo architecture – an overhauled version of the current platform.
Now measuring in at 4912mm long, the new Superb hatch is 43mm longer, while standing at 1481mm tall it’s 12mm taller.
This has allowed for 11mm more headroom in the front and an extra 6mm in the rear, with boot space improving by 20 litres to a whopping 645L.
The width (1834mm) and wheelbase (2841mm) has remained the same.
Up front there’s also a pair of slimmer LED Matrix headlights, while the range-topping Sportline and Laurin & Klement models get larger wheels and a sportier body kit.
Under the bonnet there’s the choice of three petrol engines and two diesels, some of which feature mild-hybrid electrification.
The entry-level engine is now a 110kW 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol that gets a 48-volt belt-driven starter-generator and a small lithium-ion battery. This system allows greater energy recuperation, an electric power boost under hard acceleration and a coast function when you come off the throttle.
Two 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine variants will be offered globally – one front-wheel drive version with 150kW and another with 195kW that comes standard with all-wheel drive.
There’s also a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel that musters 110kW, while a second, more powerful all-wheel drive 2.0 TDI gets 142kW.
Whichever you choose, all versions come with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission as standard.
Inside, there’s a new 13-inch infotainment system that can be combined with a head-up display for the first time in the big Skoda.
Helping improve ease of use, there’s three rotary push buttons below the touch-screen. The 32mm-diameter Smart Dials are said to provide quick and easy access to many of the vehicle’s functions without having to toggle through endless sub-menus.
Among other changes, the gear lever has been relocated to the steering column to free up space in the redesigned and now roomier centre console.
The interior also features more sustainable materials. The fabric textiles, for example, are now made from 100 per cent recycled polyester.
More teasers of the bigger new Superb sedan and even more spacious wagon are expected ahead of the official November debut.
