All-new 2024 Skoda Superb wagon teased

Fourth generation of Skoda’s family sedan and wagon to offer more space and higher tech than ever

The new-generation 2024 Skoda Superb has again been previewed ahead of its November debut overseas and its Australian launch next year.

We’ll have to wait a little longer until the fourth instalment of the Superb fastback sedan and wagon family is fully revealed, but the lightly camouflaged wagon pictured gives us our closest look yet at how the large car has evolved.

The changes aren’t dramatic but its shoulders are more pronounced and there’s more rakish rear styling.

Up front there’s a pair of slimmer LED Matrix headlights, while the new Sportline and Laurin & Klement model grades are set to offer more distinct styling, with the former offering bigger wheels and sportier body kit.

The big news is what’s happened under the bonnet, with a choice of three petrol engines and two diesels, some of which feature mild-hybrid electrification.

At the top of the tree, the Superb gains an advanced 150kW 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid powertrain with a pure-electric range of more than 100km.

However, there are no plans to offer the PHEV in Australia, with Skoda Australia skipping plug-in hybrids and waiting until full-electric models become available.

From its introduction, the new base engine will be a mild-hybrid 1.5-litre turbo that produces 110kW. Two versions of the 2.0-litre turbo petrol will be available, one with 150kW and another with 195kW.

Just one diesel will be available: a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel with either 110kW or 140kW.

All engines will be combined with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, with all-wheel drive standard on the most powerful petrol and turbo-diesel 2.0-litre.

Longer, taller, but narrower than the current Superb, the sedan measures 4912mm long (+43mm), 1481mm high (+12mm) and 1849mm wide (-15mm).

The wagon, meanwhile, measures 4902mm long, 1482mm high (+5mm) and the same 1849mm wide.

Both share the same 2841mm wheelbase as the previous generation, which makes sense as the fourth-generation Superb will be built on an updated version of the current car’s MQB platform.

The more generous proportions translate into extra space, Skoda promises, for both the driver and passengers, plus a boot capacity of 645 litres for the sedan and 690L for the wagon.

The latter now comes with an electric parcel shelf while both get a new tablet in the second row that’s mounted on the centre arm rest between the driver and front passenger seat.

Ahead of the driver is a large 12.9-inch digital instrument cluster and a head-up display. For the first time, the gear shifter has been deleted and replaced by a column-mounted shifter to maximise space on the centre console.

Driver assist aids have also been enhanced, with a new turn assist, curve assist and a new crossroad assist feature, while there’s now up to 10 airbags on board.

Other new safety tech includes an upgraded front and rear radar that can now detect cyclists, plus a Top View function that provides the driver with a high-definition 360-degree image around the car to help spot obstacles easier.

Since the modern Superb was introduced back in 2001, Skoda says it has sold an incredible 1,560,000 examples worldwide, with the outgoing third-generation wagon and sedan being the most popular version yet (800,000).

The biggest global markets for the family-friendly model are China, Germany and the Czech Republic.

For the fifth generation, production moves from Kvasiny (Czech Republic) to Bratislava (Slovakia), where the Superb sedan and wagon will be made alongside the ninth-generation 2024 Volkswagen Passat that will only be offered as a wagon.
