Jeep has finally shown-off its new-generation Cherokee medium SUV, but at this stage there are no immediate plans for the Subaru Forester rival Down Under.
The 2026 Jeep Cherokee has debuted in North America as the flagbearer for Stellantis’ new hybrid era, breaking cover with the group’s next-generation 1.6-litre turbo-petrol-electric hybrid system.
In this application, the system outputs a combined 154kW/312Nm, uses a claimed 6.4 litres of fuel per 100km and drives all four wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Jeep is very proud of the new system and says the electrified Cherokee can cover more than 800km on a full tank, though there’s not much electric range since it’s a plugless hybrid and only has a 1.08kWh battery pack.
Much squarer and sophisticated than before, the new Cherokee boasts best-in-class approach and departure angles of 19.6 and 29.4 degrees respectively, a rampover angle of 18.8 degrees and 204mm of ground clearance.
It backs up its geometry with the ‘Jeep Active Drive I’ all-wheel-drive system and Selec-Terrain traction management suite, the latter offering four drive modes: Auto, Sport, Snow, Sand/Mud.
Headline creature comforts and safety equipment across the range include a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, keyless entry, automatic wipers, front and rear autonomous emergency braking, intersection collision assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross path detection, drowsy driver detection and active driving assist.
At this stage there are no publicly announced plans to offer the new-generation Jeep Cherokee in Australia, but it’s still early days yet.
The previous model was axed from our market back in 2022 and never really found favour with local consumers, though there’s little doubt the new model’s hybrid powertrain will enhance its appeal if it’s greenlit for Oz.
