New Jeep Grand Cherokee recalled: Rear suspension could detach
Grand Cherokee’s steering also subject to separate recall while smaller Jeep Cherokee strikes trouble tooMore than 2000 examples of the new-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L are the subject of a safety recall in Australia as part of a global problem that could see its rear suspension coil springs detach while driving.
An official recall notice is yet to be published locally but a Jeep Australia spokesperson has confirmed to carsales that owners of 2052 WL-series Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs (including the long-wheelbase L model) produced between 2021 and 2023 will soon be contacted regarding the fault.
It follows action already underway in the US, where the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a recall notice on June 8 for 331,401 Grand Cherokees that revealed the rear coil springs “may have been incorrectly installed and detach from the vehicle while driving”.
Jeep Australia’s spokesperson said customers would receive “a notification when the recall remedy and parts are available” via the brand’s dealer and service network.
As well as the suspension-related issue, a separate recall notice has been issued for the Grand Cherokee in both the US and Australia for a manufacturing fault with the steering system.
Specifically, the steering column shaft could separate from the U-joint and cause a loss of steering control.
In Australia, this issue impacts 280 examples of the Jeep Grand Cherokee produced between 2021 and 2023.
Upon inspection at a Jeep dealership, the steering column shaft and related parts may be replaced if required, free of charge.
While there’s no listing yet for the suspension recall on the federal Department of Transport’s Vehicle Recalls website, you can visit the site to view the full recall notice for the steering recall and to check whether your specific vehicle is impacted, based on the VIN number.
These are the first recalls to hit the new WL Jeep Grand Cherokee in Australia, whereas the previous WK series was among the most recalled vehicles in the nation, with more than 20 notices to its name.
Jeep Cherokee
On a smaller scale, Jeep Australia is also recalling 63 examples of the KL Jeep Cherokee mid-size SUV produced between 2015 and 2023 to fix a manufacturing fault with its power transfer unit (PTU).
According to the recall notice, the differential gear splines inside the PTU may wear out and cause a loss of motive power while driving, as well as the failure of the ‘park’ position for the transmission while the vehicle is stationary.
