All-new 2026 Volvo ES90 to boast 700km range

The all-new 2026 Volvo ES90 sedan will cover up to 700km on a single charge while ultra-fast DC charging will add as much as 300km of range in just 10 minutes, when the EV is fully revealed on March 5.

Set to be sold alongside the combustion-powered S90, which will be overhauled to keep it fresh, the Volvo ES90 keeps its traditional three-box silhouette but gets the Geely-owned brand’s latest EV tech, including a new 800V electrical architecture.

This helps give the ES90 far faster charging capability than the firm’s flagship EX90, with an ultra-fast 350kW DC charger able to add 300km of range in just 10 minutes or deliver a 10 to 80 per cent charge in 20 minutes.

Sharing new pics of the car it plans to unwrap, we get our first look at the unusual split tailgate and weird LEDs mounted within the rear windscreen, instead of a conventional high-level brake light.

Volvo says the ES90 is driven by lighter e-motors but has yet to release official power outputs. However, a previous leak suggests a peak power output of 380kW for the Performance version.

The long-range 700km figure is thought to have been achieved using a rear-drive version that should produce around 210kW.

Within, we’ve still yet to see the Audi A6 e-tron rival’s cabin but the Swedish brand has pledged it will employ more recycled and natural materials in its production.

Volvo will also reveal the source of rare metals used in the battery pack and their carbon footprint, in a bid to provide more clarity over the full environmental impact of its latest vehicle.

Sharing the same SPA2 platform as the EX90, the ES90 just misses out on Volvo’s next-gen SPA3 architecture that will debut on the smaller EX60 that’s also due in 2026.

Despite that, the ES90 still introduces the car-maker’s dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin processor that will eventually be rolled out retrospectively on the EX90 and delivers far more computing power.

Capable of supporting more sophisticated Artificial Intelligence-based active safety features, the ES90 will come with one LiDar, five radars, eight cameras and twelve ultrasonic sensors that should provide it with Level 3 (eyes/hands off the road) self-driving capability.

The ES90 is tipped to measure in at 4990mm long, 1945mm wide and 1547mm high, with a huge 3102mm wheelbase that liberates huge amounts of space within the cabin and matches larger luxury limousines, despite being around 100mm shorter than the old S90.

Rivals will include the new Audi A6 e-tron, BMW i5 and Tesla Model S, with the Australian-bound ES90 expected to arrive sometime next year and be sourced from China, just like the larger flagship EX90 and related Polestar 3.

More will be revealed later this week when the 2026 Volvo ES90 is officially revealed.
