An all-new battery-electric SUV from MG has been completely leaked online ahead of its Australian launch next year.
Dubbed the MG S5 in China and brandishing similar optics to the MG4 hatchback, it’s been reported the new vehicle will be called the MG4 SUV and will replace the ageing MG ZS.
However, carsales understands the vehicle is no certainty to replace the MG ZS, currently Australia’s top-selling small SUV, nor will it be called the MG4 SUV.
It’s not clear what the vehicle will be called when it arrives in Australia but images and first details of the new small SUV were published by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), showing visual similarities with both the MG4 hatch and the flagship $100,000-plus Cyberster roadster.
These include its pointy nose and slimline headlights, but black plastic cladding for the wheel arches, side sills and a pair of satin silver roof rails give it a conventional SUV look.
At the rear, a full-width LED light bar and a pair of Y-shaped tail-lights appear as though they might be shared with the MG4. A panoramic glass roof and different alloy wheel designs suggest at least three model grades are being prepped.
Plenty of data on the new 2025 MG S5 has been released by the MIIT, including a rear axle-mounted 125kW electric motor powering the new model, and a top speed of 170km/h.
The MG S4 SUV will measure in at 4476mm long, 1849mm wide and stand 1621mm tall with a wheelbase of 2730mm. Those figures suggest it will be around 162mm longer than a MG ZS with a wheelbase stretched by 149mm, which would put at the larger end of the small SUV segment.
It’s also wider and lower than the MG ZS SUV.
Like the MG4, its new SUV sibling will sit on the same Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) and appears to use the same base-grade e-motor.
Battery types are not yet clear but expect to see one or more of the MG4's energy systems, with the 51kWh, 64kWh and possibly 77kWh batteries set to appear on the menu.
There's no word if the mightiest MG4 XPOWER powertrain will be offered but the 320kW/620Nm dual-motor powertrain would easily provide a sub-4.0 second 0-100km/h acceleration time and a circa-200km/h top speed.
It's expected the new MG S5 SUV will commence its official teaser campaign ahead of a full reveal later in the year, with an Australian launch sometime in 2025.
